Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

When I close Rhythmbox 0.12.5 (Ubuntu 9.10 beta) via its menus (Music -> Quit), it closes and terminates. However, when I use the close box in the Rhythmbox window, it simulates Music -> Close, i.e. the process does not terminate, and the notification icon stays active. In prior Ubuntu versions, the close box resulted in a true quit. Most other applications work the same way, i.e. selecting the close box terminates the application.

Thank you for your bug report, the option is a gconf one

This is because of the HUGE amount of posts in Jaunty asking for the close button to minimize Rhythmbox. I, personally, preferred this behavior (close is close, not minimize). Like Sebastien said, you can disable this in gconf, but then you also lose the ability to minimize Rhythmbox by clicking the tray icon. I wrote a patch adding a "Minimize to Tray" checkbox to the status icon preferences that, when unchecked, causes Rhythmbox to close when clicking the close box, and still allows you to minimize Rhythmbox by clicking the tray icon. When you can't please everyone, add an option :)

doesn't setting /apps/rhythmbox/plugins/status-icon/status-icon-mode to 2 do what you want?

the issue is not a karmic blocker

When status-icon-mode is set to 2, clicking the tray icon minimizes Rhythmbox normally, not to the tray (?). But, yes, it does make the close button exit.

is that what you wanted or not? if not could you explain the issue again there?

Okay, I'll try to be a little more descriptive. There are actually two problems, one is the behavior of the close button, and the other is the behavior of clicking the status-icon.

In Jaunty, Rhythmbox was shut down when you clicked the close box. Also, Rhythmbox was minimized to the "tray" (Notification Area) if you clicked it's status-icon.
* Close - quits rhythmbox; icon-click - minimizes to tray

Now, Rhythmbox's default behavior is to minimize to the tray when the close button is clicked, and it minimizes to the tray if you click the status-icon.
* Close - minimizes to tray; icon-click - minimizes to tray

When you set status-icon-mode to 2, the close button now shuts down Rhythmbox, but clicking the status-icon minimizes Rhythmbox normally (to the "Window List" panel)
* Close - quits rhythmbox; icon-click - minimizes to window list

Neither of these options are equivalent to the Jaunty RB behavior (which is the behavior I'm looking for).

could you try to set status-icon-mode to 3?

Hi Isaac, I have the exact same concern. Does your patch return Rhythmbox to the Jaunty behavior? If so, what do I *do* with the patch?

Many thanks!

Hi Ahmedh,

My previous patch made too many unnecessary changes, use this instead. It changes the behavior of status-icon-mode 2, and is just a one-line fix.

You should be able to drop it into the debian/patches directory and build normally, i.e:

$ sudo apt-get build-dep rhythmbox
$ apt-get source rhythmbox
$ cp 99_fix_status_icon_mode_2.patch rhythmbox-0.12.5/debian/patches/
$ cd rhythmbox-0.12.5
$ dpkg-buildpackage

After you install the deb, change your status icon preferences to 'Always Visible'.

can't you just change the value of the gconf key?

I don't know why this is so hard to explain. Ok, so by default rhythmbox hides itself when you click the close box, as opposed to exiting. To fix this, one can set the value of status-icon-mode to 2, then rhythmbox exits when you click close. Fair enough.

Now, a WHOLE NEW ISSUE comes up when status-icon-mode is set to 2, and that is: clicking the status icon does not minimize rhythmbox to the status tray. The only fix for this is to set status-icon-mode back to 3, in which case we have to deal with the non-exiting close button again.

I admit that these are two separate issues, and should probably have separate reports, in which case I would call the second one "clicking status-icon does not minimize rhythmbox when status-icon-mode is set to 2". But they are closely tied together (and they make it impossible for people to have a rhythmbox that behaves like it did in jaunty)

ANYWAYS, I have recently switched to Kubuntu, per suggestion of a friend, therefore this issue no longer affects me, and this will be my last comment.
