Thanks for your bugreport.

The software-center is not (yet) a poweruser tool. Overwriting the unauthenticated packages warning with conent from the center is dangerous because all the content in the center right now comes from the main archive. So while I think we need to have some override for this in the future its not something that we can do for karmic.

This is something which a regular non-power-user will encounter. Instead of throwing up a traceback, I would suggest we have a neat message which indicates to the user
1) the reason of failure and
2) suggests going to synaptic for installing the same (ofcourse with a warning that this could be dangerous)

Although not related to this bug, encrypt was a standard option in nautilus, however it has disappeared in karmic. This is the reasons I tried to install seahorse-plugins and encountered this error. So any user who was using encrypt file option in nautilus is potentially going to encounter this issue.

If only power users are expected to install packages that require unauthenticated packages as dependencies, perhaps those packages should not be listed in the Ubuntu Software Center to begin with.

For example, if you try to install ubuntu-restricted-extras through software-center, then you get a warning about w32codecs not being able to be authenticated. Great. Why is ubuntu-restricted-extras listed in the Software Center at all, then?

Anything listed in the Software Center should be installable through the Software Center. Anything not installable through the Software Center shouldn't be listed there.

I just tried installing seahorse-plugins and ubuntu-restricted-extras in USC 1.1.12. Both of them worked fine, without any warnings (apart from bug 523341 and bug 523420). It's difficult for me to design behavior for a problem I can't see. Perhaps someone could provide reliable steps to reproduce the problem? (These might include deliberately deleting a file off my system, or trying to install something from a deliberately incomplete repository, or whatever.)

is this still an issue in Ubuntu 10.10 if so steps to reproduce this bug would be really helpful as requested in previous comment.
