Bug Description

My thinkpad T30 precipitously would not boot any more. I have been running ubuntu solely since gusty on this laptop. It would stop booting and stall. I thought that my HD was going out so I put in another I have. I had an old 8.04 iso disk, CD version already, so I loaded it and then proceeded to go through the normal updates via the update manager, including new distro updates. Everything worked just as it had before with the other HD perfectly.

After updating to 9.04 the computer was still running fine. The very next round of updates per the update manager ran fine. I restarted the computer as directed. The bios runs fine and the grub loader works okay but then the computer just stops on the boot screen. This is exactly what was happening before. It just stops booting and just sits there. I left it for a1/2 hour once and nothing happened, it was still stuck at the same point in the boot process as the previous HD had done.

So I d-loaded the 9.04 iso on another computer and burned it. I did a complete re-install of 9.04 and again it worked fine until the very next series of updates. The very same problem started occuring again. Up on start up I went into the GRUB loader and booted the kernel 2.6.28-11-generic and the computer booted just fine and the T30 works as it should. The kernel 2.6.28-15-generic was first on the boot list so naturally it was the default kernel to boot to. I would assume that it is this kernel that is the problem.

I looked through the kernel patches and saw none for a thinkpad T30. I also learned that kernel patches are specific to manufacturer as well.

Please look at the problem let me know if I can provide any other information.

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Sergio,

To better understand your hardware information,

1. please run the following command:

apport-collect -p linux 442364

to attach related hardware information to the bug report

2. Are there any more recent kernel between 2.6.28-11-generic and 2.6.28-15-generic that you can test to see if you can reproduce the issue?

3. When the system hang at start up, you can try press Ctrl + Alt + F1 to go into the console to see the detail message and report here. i.e. What is the last line you see on the screen? or If there are any error message.

4. Ubuntu 9.10 beta just release couple days ago, please also download the iso and test to see if you have any problem booting from the live CD (or installed on the HD, if possible)

Thanks,

1. I did the apport-collect command. That should be attached to the bug

2. There are other kernels I d-loaded them to no avail.

The kernel that won't work is the 2.6.28-15-generic. Currently I am booting
to 2.6.28.11-generic. So the next apport will be from that kernel I hope it
will help you out.

Shang,

On posts 10-14 I put the old HD back in and did the same apport commands as previous. The old HD has the kernel 2.6.28-14.47. I booted to this from the grub menu. Just as I had been able to with the second HD.

As with the Second HD (the one I just took out and put the original back in) the boot stalled with kernel 2.6.28-15 generic, but was successful with kernel 2.6.28-14 generic.

Thanks,
Dan

Shang,

The latest kernel did not work. The boot stalled again, so I moved on to
part two of your e-mail.

The first link would not load in the package manager so I went to synaptic
and marked the header and it pulled the proper dependencies. Then I d-loaded
the second link and then restarted the computer.

And it boots fine now without having to load an older kernel from the grub
loader.

Thanks for all of your help. I learned a great deal.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem with 9.10 and IBM Thinkpad A31p.
I can boot 2.6.28-14-generic, but it locks the cpu on 2.6.28-15-generic, 2.6.28-16-generic, 2.6.31-14-generic.

Costa,

Shang helped me fix 2.6.28.15 and then 2.6.28.16 through the update manager presented no problems. However like you when I upgraded to 2.6.31-14 generic the boot failures started up again. cpu soft lock up was the error. So I pulled out that hard drive and threw in number 2 and loaded Linux Mint which is also debian based and uses gnome, synaptic, firefox, and all of the goodies that ubuntu offers plus it loaded all of the needed media codecs, addons, back ports, and drivers with the first update that happened right after I got my internet connection established.

The developers of linux Mint are using a jaunty Kernel but actually are mirroring ubuntu on new releases and updates. I would like to be able to put my old hard drive back in and use ubuntu but I can't until a patch is released. I think that ubuntu developers are so tied up with other problems that this will take a back seat until they get other major problems fixed.

Down load a torrent of linux Mint and enjoy as I am now until ubuntu is fixed for us.

If Shang could offer any help on getting 2.6.31-14 generic working on our machines I would appreciate it immensely.

Hi Dan,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 442364

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.
