I found a fix for this bug. See Bug 440589. The issue was use of the realtime kernel.

I can't see what I think is an appropriate status to set this bug to. It needs to be "closed due to obscure OS-related bug"

That's the wrong bug number. The bug I was trying to refer to is on the OpenOffice forum.

Summary is: parts of OO install and update procedures fail and cause the machine to crash when running on a realtime kernel.

Fix is: boot using a standard non-realtime kernel and Add/Remove... under applications will allow updates to be installed.

My reason for using the realtime kernel is to use packages from Ubuntu Studio.

I would not even begin to know how to report this to the right place - as a bug with the realtime kernel.

Notice the bug submitter said this only happens on linux-rt I have seen other reports in the past about the linux-rt kernel causing problems with OOo, not really sure why though, but I am not a kernel guy.

affects: openoffice.org (Ubuntu) → linux-rt (Ubuntu)

I can't boot the generic kernel because it's not installed on my system. I installed Ubuntu Studio 9.04 and there is no generic kernel. No matter what i try (synaptic or terminal), I can't installed the linux-generic package because the installer jumps right back to the openoffice.org-emailmerge update and immediately freezes. Is there any way i can prevent this from happening and install the generic kernel? Do i need to completely reinstall Ubuntu Studio from cd and then try to install the generic kernel? I hope i can do it without having to completely reinstall the whole system.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that could be fixed in the Beta release of Karmic Koala. It would help us greatly if you could test with it! Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Please let me know if there's a way to install the generic kernel without having the installer jump to "openoffice.org-emailmerge" upgrades. I really don't want to reinstall ubuntu studio from cd again.

giraffe,

Download from http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux/ the right image:

linux-image-2.6.24-25-generic_2.6.24-25.63_amd64.deb
or
linux-image-2.6.24-25-generic_2.6.24-25.63_i386.deb

So install it with: "sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.24-25-generic_2.6.24-25.63_amd64.deb"

Ciao,
Alessio
