Bug Description

Binary package hint: cairo-dock

Using the latest version 2.0.9 from > https://edge.launchpad.net/~cairo-dock-team/+archive/ppa

When a new window opens , sometimes , it does not show up in the taskbar and skips the list of the open windows.

This is very confusing when several windows are open and I only realize that the window is already open when i try to open the app again and it comes up from behind !
While i'v checked if it is a problem with the window skipping the panel window list too , but alas, its a problem *only* with cairo dock.
This is not specific to any app or any event , it is very random and I'm not sure how to debug this issue.

This is not a new problem , I'v been facing this problem since version 1

Workaround:
Restart cairo-dock > now the app is shown in the list of open windows.

The last cairo-dock's package is 2.0.8. Your problem is about 2.0.9, which isn't in Ubuntu. Problem exist too in 2.0.8 version?

I have stated in the bug description itself, this is *not* a new problem , it has been happening since version 1 [which i had tested with the cairo-dock.org repos too]

I had reported an earlier bug > https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cairo-dock/+bug/409821 which asks for testing in version 2.0.9 , hence i tested with the version 2.0.9 also !

Hi mac_v,

Thanks to have reported this bug but can you give us some informations like your distribution and architecture (Ubuntu 9.10 I think but 32bits or 64bits ?), your Desktop Manager (Gnome, KDE, XFCE,...) your Window Manager (Compiz, Metacity, Kwin, etc.), if you use Cairo-Dock with or without OpenGL, your graphic card, with which theme, etc.
If you think it can be helpful, please join the output of :
   $ cairo-dock
or
   $ cairo-dock -l debug

I confirm the bug with empathy but not what you say here. Maybe can you add some precisions, a screenshot or a screencast ?
Thanks for your help ;)

Since i have the problems with ATI , i'm using without OpenGL
Window Manager : compiz
Theme is a modified version of Clear by Coz [hmm... never thought it might be theme related , but this is the theme I have always used]

But this is a *very* tricky bug , it is *highly* random [no wonder you cant reproduce it] , this was the main reason i didnt report it earlier :-(

Maybe its theme related , I think its more due to a bug in the module , but i'll try to keep running the dock in debug mode , hopefully i'll catch it in action !

A screenshot of the bug is not difficult , once it occurs ;)

thanks for the bug report !
does it really occur with any appli or only for some specific one.
could you please post the result of "cairo-dock -l debug" when it happens
(only the lines between the moment youlaunch the application until the
moment the icon should have appeared in the dock.
thanks in advance !

This bug is really tricky!

OK, maybe i have a little bit hint about this.
I think this starts to happen when cairo-dock has been running for several hours.
I usually keep my system always on nearly 24/7. so that maybe a reason i notice this bug more.

I caught a screenshot of the bug . [this was in a session of ~12hrs]

Notice: From the switcher widget and the screenshot, there are 4 windows open 1.Firefox 2.Evolution 3.Xchat and the fourth one is the recent one Calculator

But note the module only shows 3 windows , the *calculator is missing from the windows list* .
Even the Switcher widget does not show the calculator.
[Unfortunately i had forgotten to start cairo-dock in debug mode]

I wondered if this was a calculator specific bug , so i first closed calculator and i restarted cairo-dock in debug mode and again opened calculator. but this time the calculator is shown in the list.

From my previous experience it was not specific to any app and i now believe it is related to running cairo-dock for long hours.

May not even be related to Taskbar module as such since the switcher widget is also affected.

I'll get back with a debug log about this.
Thanx

Attaching the cairo debug.txt

I'm was confused since the debug includes French and my French is not very good ;)
I did not want to unnecessarily delete lines which might be important.
So i'm attaching the full debug. [6716 lines]
Since this might have been caused by some error during starting of the dock or due to something inbetween.

To narrow it down i'v gone through the debug and
its somewhere around the line 6118 onwards , because i remember closing the vlc player and opening the same file in Totem Media Player.
Its either at that line or at the previous instance of vlc close , line 5952.

Hope this helps :)

did you notice an abnormal use of RAM/CPU from the dock after many hours of
use ?
are you running on the SVN ? I've added recently some debug to trace this
specific problem.
I'm wondering if it's not a problem of X ID being used 2 times during the
same session. I believed that this could not happen, but maybe with time ...
or a collision in the hash table ?
well anyway thanks for the hint, and looking forward to your debug :-)

ok, thank you !
It will be done shortly, since we're moving from SVN to LaunchPad, so we
plan to release some testing packages periodically.

I restarted the cairo-dock and found that the dock was still *not* listing the window , the window is a Java applet window from www.adrive.com , it appears when uploading a file using the java.

This window is shown in the Panel's Window list but in the Dock!

I will upload the rc2 soon (this afternoon probably)

I think that Java windows don't repect "rules" but I don't know. Maybe Fab can fix this bug ;)

PS : If you want there is a tutorial and a script for bazaar : http://www.cairo-dock.org/ww_page.php?p=From%20BZR&lang=en
But the weekly ppa is easier and faster to use.

I dont think so , this java window is listed in the panel's window list.
But not displayed in cairo-dock alone.

Its difficult finding this java window because the uploads take time and
i'm always searching for this window to check if the upload is finished
or not... :(
A workaround i do for now is to check the metacity option "Always on
top" , so it stays in front of firefox in the respective deskop.

Is this a recent fix? or something you have done earlier to version
2.0.9.

Thanks for looking into this :)

PS: Not sure if the cairo-dock team keeps track of the questions section

as far as I can see from your debug, this window has the flag "skip taskbar"
on it when it is created. (the line "this window is timid" ^_^ ), and
therefore the dock skips it.
so maybe it remove this flag after, and the dock ignores this change.
that would be quite an awful behavior !

Hmmm... the way the site works is>
first the applet shows up in the firefox browser itself,
once the files to be uploaded are selected , the uploading window opens
as a separate window...

Maybe thats where the confusion arises...

I think its safe to say that this bug is fixed...

I havent noticed any missing windows. The java window and issue of doesn't keep tracks of windows , is probably a separate bug.

Changed in cairo-dock (Ubuntu):
