Bug Description

Hello, thanks for reading this!

Here is what I observed :
    * Plugging jack headphones does not mute the laptop speakers. (I can confirm this for Hardy Heron, Intrepid Ibex and Jaunty Jackalope releases.)

    * It is not possible to manually mute speakers when headphones are plugged since both of them are simultaneously controlled by Volume Control 'Front', 'Headphones' and 'PCM' tracks.
    * Volume Control 'Front Mic' and 'Front Mic Boost' tracks control both laptop and headset microphone.
(Sure for Jaunty, I do not know for any other release. I will post a comment as soon as I will know.)

Hi Gonzalo Bulnes,

Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. Can you confirm this issue exists with the Karmic Alpha 9.10 release. Images for testing are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . Please let us know your results.

If the issue remains while still running Karmic, please run the following command which will automatically gather and attach updated debug information:

apport-collect -p linux 414243

Thanks in advance.

Hello,
Hello Andrés Mujica,

First of all, I apologize to all for my duplicate contribution, the first one ended with an error, I ran apport-collect again, I should not have and I am very sorry for that. (I just received my own 42 e-mails.)

The issue is different with the Karmic Alpha 9.10 release :
1- First, there is no sound at all, but a significant noise.
        * The sound is enabled by changing the Output Audio Preferences from Radeon X1200 Series Audio controller Digital Stereo (HDMI) to Internal Audio Analog Stereo. What occurs with the noise is described below.
Important : from now all what is described below occurs with the Internal Audio Analog Stereo enabled, indeed apport-collect has been ran in these conditions.

    2- Noise always stops:
        * during between 9 and 10 seconds after modifying the sound level, then it starts again. (I tested that 3 times.)
        * during all the time the Audio Preferences window is opened, (Indeed I tested each situation several times.)
        * and during around 15 seconds (+/- 1 second, it actually is steady) after closing it.
        * during all the time a sound is played by an application (I tried with Totem and with the "preview" Nautilus provides when you hover an audio file.) and between 15 and 20 second after you close the application. (It is quite variable.)

3- When there is no noise it always starts:
        * when plugging the headphones in. (There is noise from speaker but not from headphones, in all situations the sound which is played is clear and loud.)

4- When there is noise (no sound is being played):
        * plugging the headphones in makes noise deeper for some seconds.
        * opening the Audio Preferences window idem, for around 10 seconds after closing it.
        * opening Totem idem. (around 15 seconds)

5- and last, I never noticed muting speaker had any influence on noise.

Clearly an improvement can be seen. Yet the fact remains that the issue is not really solved... Besides, the output selected by default is the wrong one. (I am not sure it would be same way when installing instead of running a live-session... maybe I will check that.) About the noise, all that I can say is that it is quite loud.

A very last comment: two audio input devices are detected, the embedded microphone, and the front jack plug. Unfortunately the front plug is the one-numbered device -that is the default one- while the embedded microphone is the second -that is not enabled by default- as a consequence microphone does not run as long as you do not switch it on manually... it is sad, isn't it?

(The both bug status changes have been done automatically...)

Thank you for your concern,
regards.
