[Jaunty] Sound only through second headphone jack. HDA-Intel on HP HDX9000

Bug Description

I have a HP HDX9000 laptop with a clean install of Jaunty. I had no problems with sound in 8.04 & 8.10. In jaunty no sound is coming from the speakers. I can get sound from the second headphone jack (this laptop has 2 headphone jacks, but only the second is working).

I have updated alsa to the latest available snapshots & pulseaudio to the latest version in themuso's PPA. I am still unable to get sound from the speakers, even though the second headphone jack is working.

I have been trying to resolve this ever since jaunty was released. I have managed to get audio through the speakers once whilst doing basic troubleshooting & following online self-help guides. Unfortunately this only lasted until I rebooted. I have not had sound through the speakers since.

Output of 'lsb_release -rd'
Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04

Output of 'apt-cache policy alsa-base':

Hi Kermiac,

Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. Can you confirm this issue exists with the Karmic Alpha 9.10 release. Images for testing are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . Please let us know your results.

If the issue remains while still running Karmic, please run the following command which will automatically gather and attach updated debug information:

apport-collect -p linux 406095

Thanks in advance.

Hi Andres,
I tried the latest Karmic Daily Build (Dated 23-08-2009) that you suggested. Unfortunately this bug is still present & sound will only output from the headphone jacks. I did notice that both headphone jacks are working when using this Daily Build, whereas only the second headphone jack is functional in Jaunty.

Hi Kermiac,

If you can, please also test the latest upstream kernel available. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

Hi Andres,

I have tested the latest upsteam kernel available as you requested.
Unfortunately the latest kernel here (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.31-rc8/) would make the unit hang at bootup so I used the latest daily build (from here http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/ ).

There appears to be no change when using this updated kernel. Sound is still output from the 2 headphone jacks only.

Thanks

This bug is a duplicate of #407790 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/407790).

After reading through that bug report I now have sound from the internal speakers in an up-to-date fresh install of Jaunty.

I added "options snd-hda-intel model=model=5stack" to the end of my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. I also unmuted several channels (surround, side, LFE, IEC958, etc - see attached pic) using alsamixer.

No way to edit above post - sorry.

the model parameter added to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf is actually "options snd-hda-intel model=5stack"

Thanks Mitch. I'm going to go ahead and mark this as a duplicate of bug 407790 for now as it does seem you both have the same codec and you've confirmed the same workaround resolves the issue for you as well. Please continue to track this issue at that report. Thanks!
