Bug Description

*** WORKAROUND **

* If model is set to 5stack-no-fp and "Line Jack Mode" = "Line Out" then sound works (Some channels have to be unmuted)
* After each reboot the "Line Jack Mode" must be set to a different value and then back to "Line Out" to make sound work

Sound worked without further configuration on Ubuntu 8.10. With Ubuntu 9.04 (also with recent Suse and Fedora versions) I had to add a model parameter to the modprobe.d/*.conf file. I used model=5stack and was happy with sound an 9.04. The current karmic version gives me no sound on the internal speakers for all configurations I tried (3stack, 5stack, 6stack and hp-hdx). The headphone is currently working, but no other speaker.

This bug could be related to 400682, but it is a slightly different notebook and sound card.

Hi Stefan Krause,

If you can, please also test the latest upstream kernel available. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

I've also file a bug on alsa about it (https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=4665 ) and I tried some things in the subsequent days.

The current status is:
* I have no way to make it work with alsa 1.0.20
* Kernel 2.6.31 comes with a more recent alsa version, which offers a new option "model=5stack-no-fp" (seems that it's still labeled 1.0.20)
* If model is set to 5stack-no-fp and "Line Jack Mode" = "Line Out" then sound works (Some channels have to be unmuted)
* After each reboot the "Line Jack Mode" must be set to a different value and then back to "Line Out" to make sound work
* This works for both the 2.6.31-6 kernel and the mainline kernel

I've tried to restart alsa after gnome starts and see if that helps with the re-adjustment of the line jack mode issue, but it didn't.

I installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-14-generic and tried again without better results. How can I check that I have the right alsa version?

The situation remains the same: I get some sound when I unmute the channels and turn the volume up and change the line jack mode as described above.
There appears to be a timeout issue: After a certain amount of time after all sound stopped I have to repeat the line jack procedure. My alsa-base.conf contains the line
options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N model=5stack-no-fp
Seems as if there's a timeout of 10 seconds after which I lose my sound again.

Even after that I would prefer not to set the line jack after each reboot.

Please let me know what other files than created by alsa-info.sh I should attach.

Alright. Don't know If I had the same problem you guys are experiencing here so let me explain what issues I had...

I updated to kubuntu karmic beta yesterday using the internet. After installation completed successfully I did also have no sound at all. My mixer also is SigmaTel STAC9271D [my mainboard is a intel dp35dp].

So i tried to install linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-14-generic . Didn't work here either. Then it came to my mind! The menu.lst wasnt updated to start with the new 2.6.31.14 kernel. I was still using the old jaunty kernel after installation. So I altered the menu.lst to start the os with the new kernel and there we go... sound was back [only had to unmute the speaker slider].

Please don't stone me if this doesn't has to do anything with the bug filed here though.

Daniel T Chen (crimsun) wrote :

@slurm no, your issue is completely unrelated (though installing the newer drivers resolves the issue)

@Stefan Is it completely necessary to specify the model? In other words, remove your addition from alsa-base.conf, perform a complete powercycle (power down for 2 minutes, then power back up), and report whether sound is audible (possibly after changing mixer settings -- but NOT a model quirk).

Stefan Krause (stefan-krause) wrote :

Wow crazy, it works without any model. Thank you!

Do I have to keep linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generics installed or is it going to be merged into the ubuntu kernel?

If you intend to continue using Karmic, yes, you'll need to keep l-b-m-a-k-g installed.

Marking fixed in both linux and linux-backports-modules-2.6.31; thanks for confirming.

Hi gltaylor1. Please install "linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic" (then reboot). The issue originally reported in this bug report has been resolved by installing this package. Also please ensure there are no extra "alsa model quirks" in your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

If this does not resolve your issue, please file a new bug report.
Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I managed to fix this myself last night. After having tried everything else, I changed

options snd slots=snd-hda-intel options snd-hda-intel model=hp

to

options snd slots=snd-hda-intel options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5

in the alsa-----.conf file and it worked.

I don't know why I needed the dv5 since I don't have a dv5 machine, but as long as it is working I am happy
