Bug Description
Binary package hint: gdm
started today ... I log out ... gdm appears with a background image ... I switch to a tty and then back to tty 7 (gdm) ... and the background images is gone ... gdm appears with a plain black background.

Looks to me like gnome-settings- daemon has died. I won't be able to check that until later though - could you please check from a console if gnome-settings- daemon is still running after you've triggered this behaviour?
