iwlagn driver crashes, preventing shutdown from completing

Bug Description

Nearly every time I shutdown, the iwlagn driver crashes and shutdown is interrupted. At this point, the only way I can shutdown is by holding down the power button. I can hear a clear 'click' as the computer then powers down. The driver never crashes at any other time even if I'm using wireless for hours at an end. It only occurs when I shutdown.

I'll second this bug--same problem on an HP HDX 9000 series "Dragon" (the HP 20.1" laptop) with Ubuntu 9.04 Final and latest patches as of June 14, 2009. Same issue--screen dumps look much the same as Roshan's, esp. 7th or 8th photo. Nothing in the logs. Found some errors about "hpet" having to reset the counter/timeout to some huge number like 56000, so I changed that by adding the "clocksource=jiffies" to the command-line, not that I think this has anything to do with IWLAGN (which is notorious for causing all sorts of problems on another laptop). Sometimes, I see warnings that the wireless driver (IWLAGN) is in "deep sleep!", but no idea what to do about it. These warnings may or may not be followed by the usual hang.

This problem started happening shortly after applying updates. I do *not* recall seeing this on the fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04. I may rebuild and *NOT* apply updates and see if this makes the issue go away....

Hi Roshan,

Can you try installing linux-backports-modules-jaunty to see if it helps? It has an updated compat-wireless stack which may help. If this issue remains, do you see anything like a kernel oops or panic when the driver crashes during shutdown? Even if you have to take a digital photo of your screen of the oops/panic to attach to this bug that would be most helpful. Thanks.

Also, I assume if you unload the module prior to shutdown the system does not crash?

Hi, Leann,

I have attached a photograph of the screen that displays when it crashes. Unfortunately, the top part of that text is snipped because it scrolls by too fast. Is there some way of making the shutdown log to a text file? The laptop then just does nothing after saying "Will now halt". Occasionally hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del at this point will say something like "Stopping all md devices..." and then restart, but it's impossible to tell when this will work and when it won't. When it doesn't, there is no response whatsoever.

If the oops continues to happen on shutdown, try checking /var/log/kernel.log.0 to see if the entire oops may have been logged there. If not, try setting the font size to something smaller. For example, from a terminal:

setfont /usr/share/consolefonts/Uni1-VGA8.psf.gz

Thanks.

These are exactly the same symptoms I am experiencing.

I am working on a work-around (other than disabling all Compiz features, which seems to dramatically reduce the incidence of this annoyance).

The work-around is *NOT* a fix. Just a work-around, a kludge, a stupid script that basically kills iwlagn and NetworkManager, then either shuts down the system or reboots it. Hardly elegant, but, hey, at least it's better than having the system simply hang on shutdown barfing all kinds of scary stuff on the screen....

Hi, Leann,

I have attached a photograph of the screen that displays when it
crashes. Unfortunately, the top part of that text is snipped because it
scrolls by too fast. Is there some way of making the shutdown log to a
text file? The laptop then just does nothing after saying "Will now
halt". Occasionally hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del at this point will say
something like "Stopping all md devices..." and then restart, but it's
impossible to tell when this will work and when it won't. When it
doesn't, there is no response whatsoever.

What would you have us install from linux-backports-modules-jaunty? I added this repository, then ran apt-get clean all, apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade.

Got nothing. No new packages, backports or otherwise.

Sadness....I guess I'm back to writing my stupid hack to deal with this.

For what it is worth, I'm not sure, yet, but I suspect that it's a conflict of some sort between Compiz and iwlagn... It doesn't seem to happen as often (if at all) if I disable the Compiz effects (but, unfortunately, turning off all the Compiz effects results in the CPU, rather than the GPU handling graphics, which means cruddy graphic performance).

Oh! My fault.... I'd simply thought I was supposed to add the repository called "backports".

I'll try your command.

In the meanwhile, this script seems to work reasonably well to "get around" the issue, though
it certainly doesn't resolve it.

#!/bin/bash
sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManager stop
sudo rmmod iwlagn
if [ -z $1 ]; then
{
STOPCODE=0
}
else
{
STOPCODE=$1
}
fi
sudo init $STOPCODE

Will post again with results of linux-backports-modules-jaunty after a day or two....if I don't hear from you first. ;-)

I just wanted to write to thank you for that. I apologize for not having remembered to update--it did fix the problem. I may be converting my other laptop from OpenSUSE 11.1 to Ubuntu 9.04 since it experiences a similar issue with its IWLAGN driver.

Saw your presentation on YouTube.... Very impressive!

Thank you, again! It's people like you that are the reason that I'm a die-hard open-source fan....

Take care,

Aaron.
