Bug Description

In Jaunty, it takes around a minute or so to start up inkscape and gimp remotely through x11, even when doing it locally using 127.0.0.1.

Also , the majority of inkscape's tools are almost unusable, since it takes around 10-20 seconds to draw a line after you really draw that line using your mouse. The tools affected are tweak, eyedropper with just mouseover, and tweak, 3d, pencil, pen, callig, text, connector, eyedropper , when using them.

This will also affect all LTSP setups on Jaunty.

Steps to reproduce:
- allow remote X11 connections on your machine.
- startup gimp or inkscape doing "DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0 gimp" (or DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0 inkscape)
- wait...
- try to use inkscape without screaming :-)

Just did interrupt gimp and inkscape when they were completely started, here are the results:

time DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0 gimp

real 0m51.580s
user 0m3.964s
sys 0m0.264s

when run locally

time gimp

real 0m6.731s
user 0m2.476s
sys 0m0.280s

This really seems to be X related , and related to new libraries in Jaunty. I did try to test it replacing Inkscape binary with Intrepid's one, and the behavior was the same. Also, I tested it using NX , and this behavior wasn't happening.

To troubleshoot, either

- try to open inkscape doing "DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0 inkscape" if tcp connections to X are allowed
- ssh -X you@localhost , and start inkscape.

You are going to experience the trouble.

I will gladly provide any other information needed to troubleshoot if you tell me more about it. I joined my lspci from my laptop where I did one test (but we tested with at least 5 different hardware situations, including on the laptop of Jon. A Cruz at LGM 2009 :-) .

@Benoit St-André, is this a regression? Were you previously able to do this without problems? If so, in which version of Ubuntu?

Hardy and Intrepid were both fine (that's what we have at the moment in
our deployments), we found the issue while testing Jaunty for LTSP
deployments.

Hello

So yes, this is a regression and it was previously working out of the box
for older version (hardy and intrepid).

Ben

PS : At this point this is a major problem for LTSP deployment as it means
that those applications can not be
used with a good user experience on Jaunty. And a Linux desktop without Gimp
and Inkscape is lacking some very
important functionality!

It seems to be related yes, I made a patched libxcb for bug 277069 and
it solved the issue.

Though the difference here is that firefox showed the bug for both
intrepid and jaunty while that inkscape and gimp issue only showed up
with jaunty.

Confirming Stéphane's comment. his PPA libxcb that corrects bug 277069 solves this inkscape and gimp's issue.

Thanks for testing to confirm the issue is the same root cause. Let's go ahead and dupe this one to that then. I uploaded the fix to karmic this morning, and we plan to SRU it to prior release(s) after there has been sufficient testing on karmic.

(Btw, if anyone wishes to hunt around through the bug tracker, there are probably many other dupes of 277069 reported against various applications.)
