jaunty constant overheating

I just updated to jaunty from dapper and my machine overheats a lot. Its a powerful laptop, Intel core 2 duo 2.4ghz . I noticed that my laptop stopped "breathing" like it did in dapper, but it never speeds up the fan and just shuts down. To recreate the issue try and slam the processor with anything, I'm using vmware.

(*edit*)When i run top it would be VMWare eating up the most resources. (*edit*)

To be fair it doesn't have to be vmware, it can be any heavy long
term process. After shutting its self down it will immediately shut
down again until it has cooled down. If you close this ticket, i'm
moving to another distribution because this bug wasn't an issue under
Hardy.

Here is the machine crashing using eclipse. The current temp is 104C,
 when it hit 105C it turned off which was less than a minute after

I have two different laptops overheating on jaunty. I had no problems with intrepid or fiesty on the same machines. I can boot into windows and they stays cool.

It gets hot enough to burn even when the labtops are closed.

They are ext3 installs.

My laptop is overheating with jaunty as well.

I thought it was the HD at first, but I kept my laptop raised and it still switched off after a short time of use. I was a little confused, and then I noticed that there was a point on my laptop that was not raised. I assume the CPU was here, and this part got VERY hot.

So, it seems that the CPU is not getting regularly cooled. Could this have something to do with the fan?

Wow, abhiroopb good post! Unfortunately my system fails to booting with the complete fix, so be careful. I know you guys are going to laugh at this python script, but it works! I just nohup it when I use vmware or really anything.

Having this exact same issue on a CoreDuo running 9.04. The cpu frequency is stocked at 1Ghz (instead of 1,83Ghz, ondemand).

I have the same problem on HP tx2000 laptop. It seems to be the problem with NVidia videocard (or chipset?). It works fine and temperature is moderate (50~70 C) unless you try to watch flash videos - then it overheats in about 10 minutes.

My laptop at work has an intel integrated videocard, and that doesn't happen at all there (of course, I don't watch youtube videos that often there, but still...)

I've tried to do a fresh install, and not installing the proprietary nvidia drivers, but the problem is still there, so it's clearly not a driver issue.

Anyway, hope this will be figured out soon.

Hello - I have to say this sounds a bit odd but it's what I'm seeing so here goes ... I had 8.04 running on a home-made machine built around an Intel DG965WH (Core2Duo) motherboard. It was ok but I had some issues with browsing so thought I'd try an upgrade to see if it resolved them (as an aside - it looks as though it has!).

As its a homemade box, I thought it a good idea to monitor temperature so have set up the sensors-applet gadget in my desktop panel, monitoring the CPUs and two of my discs.

So I upgraded initially to 8.10 and straightaway noticed that the CPU temperatures were much higher than I was used to seeing: previously they had been in the 40s or occasionally 50s when pushed. Now they were going up into the 60s and 70s. Carrying on with the upgrade into 9.04 this has continued: if I let it alone, the temperature on both cores is going well into the 70s, which is not sustainable, I think.

CPU usage is 100% on both cores: if I throttle it back by stopping tracker-indexer then the temperature drops back to around 50.

This is not an ambient temperature problem - the disc temperatures are behaving as before, around 40.

What seems really odd is that I have regularly pushed the CPUs to 100% before - I often use this box for processing video files - and have never seen the temp go over 70. So what's going on?

1 - as a short term fix, what's the easiest way to stop tracker-indexer from running up each time I start?

2 - is it possible that a change in the OS has affected the way that fans for example are being controlled?

3 - is it possible that the temperature readings are not correct?

Any clues much appreciated.

I'd like anyone of you to try playing Glest, wesnoth, or flightgear.

You'd be surprise how fast it goes into thermal shutdown. It's scary.

My laptop won't last 2 Minutes on if i run glest :'(

We loaded jaunty on a MALIBAL Satori on Oct 11th, 2010. The newer Ubuntu versions have way too many bugs for us to use in an office environment. Anyways, the machine overheats just sitting idle. Not what we expected from Ubuntu.

     Jaunty reached EOL on the 23rd of October. I'd recommend you try the current release 10.10 (Maverick) or the current LTS (Long Term Support) release of 10.04(Lucid) to determine if the heat issues are resolved on your hardware.
