I'm having the same problem... this has began to occur since I made the update to ubuntu 9.04 from ubuntu 8.10. I think that the problem it's the new version of rhythmbox (the 0.12.0)

I'm using a Dell vostro 1310 and The play, stop, next and previous multimedia keys aren't working.

I have looked with the terminal and ubuntu does recognize those keys when I press them, but rhythmbox doesn't respond to them. By the way, the volume multimedia keys work perfect.

In the keyboard shortcuts configuration those multimedia keys are configured in the right way.

Thank you very much for your attention and your useful help!...

Best Regards...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

 * Is this reproducible?
 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
 * Are the keys correctly listed in the keybindings dialog?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

what key do you try to use exactly which doesn't work in rhythmbox? does it work in totem for example?

could you run dbus-monitor --session and see if anything is listed when using the keys? are you using GNOME locally?

I am using GNOME, yes.

dbus-monitor --session doesn't list anything at all,when I press the non-working keys.

It does however list for the working ones. Do you want the output for the working ones?

Sebastien Bacher (seb128) wrote :

no need to list the working ones no, it means that gnome-settings-daemon is not sending events for those keys, can you run gnome-settings-daemon --no-daemon --debug and see what is printed when using the non work key?

could you also try if you get the issue in a guest session?

Hi!

I have tested what you told us (sudo gnome-settings-daemon --no-daemon --debug). When I pressed a key that it's working fine, it printed some information about that action, but when I press the non working keys it doesn't print anything at all, the only thing that happen is that the cursor stop turning between black and white and remain black while I'm pressing the non working key.

I'll attach a text file with the info printed in the terminal, the last things that are printed were the response when I pressed the working keys.

I don't have the guest session activated, i couldn't test it.

Thank you very much for your help, thank you so much for sharing with us your time.

Hi Sebastien

xev list the key events for any key, including the non working keys.
I'll attach a text file showing the output of the xev.

I have tested it pressing the play (XF86AudioPlay), stop (XF86AudioStop), previous (XF86AudioPrev), next (XF86AudioNext) keys, that are the non working keys. After pressing those keys I pressed the working keys. (XF86AudioLowerVolume), (XF86AudioRaiseVolume). Both (the working and non working keys) showed response.

Thank you very much for your help

Hi,

I'm going to jump on the bandwagon here with a big "me too".

But my mute button does not work either, if that is relevant.

The strange thing is that these keys used to work in Jaunty before. They only recently stopped working. (Update perhaps?)

I have tried most of the stuff mentioned above with similar outputs. If there is anything you are wanting me to add, just say.

Hi,

Sorry it's taken me a while to respond. My findings where the same as Firesock and Robert Marshall. Thanks guys for testing.

I've now filed a bug with Gnome as requested.
