amilo pro 2030 with wrong display settings

i have a old amilo pro and when i installed the jaunty version of ubuntu i got a screen resolution that does not fit. i tried to change some xorg.conf lines by adding some stuff and nothing happened.
i am newer to linux but i find odd that i had suse 11.1 on it and i had no problems with the display configurations.
but ubuntu;fedora ;mint and other distros can´t seem to get it right as long as hardware detection is concerned
please help me because im triyng to learn linux and if i can not install and configure a distro what kind of linux user am i.
When i try to go to preferences/screen resolution i get by default a 1660x1200 with no refresh rate and if i try to change it to 1024x768 it goes nuts.

Hi Scott,

I got the same problem, but it went as far as from 8.04.
Running screen in safe mode in 800x600 was my solution.
Now updated to 9.04 and still no 1024x768. If I try, screen goes bananas.

well, as i told you before i am a new linux user and for the worst i am self taught as well so i could not find answers for that problem. never the less i tried other linux distros and now i am using a portuguese linux distro called "caixa magica" now in it's 12 release and it is working fine with no troubles as far as hardware detection is concerned. Guys at cannonical sent me a message requesting more info but as i am a newbie there are just some things that are out of my reach as finding the info that they requested and posting it. Never the less i got a reply and that shows that they care and i hope you are more experienced in linux than me so you can provide them the info they need to sort the answers out.
Hope you get better results than i did because ubuntu is such a good linux flavour.

Yes I have solved the problem.
Tried to post this on the forum, but I didn't get access yet.
The solution is to rewrite your xorg.conf as described in one of the
many threads. Can mail you the solution if you want to.

please do send me the solution for that so i can install ubuntu on my amilo pro and get the correct display settings. and also as i am always eager to learn new stuff mail me anytime you wish to share knoledge please.

Thanks for your help finding the logs! Assigning to xorg-server, confirmed since logs are in comment #2. Just so you know, this section of Launchpad is primarily used to help diagnose and correct programming errors in the development release of Ubuntu, and is nearly entirely maintained by volunteers. If you have specific hardware configuration problems that you would like fix in the current stable release, please also look at the "answers" section and the forums.

Thanks for the reply. I found the fix.
Seems that the xorg is very precisein the case of the Amilo V2030.
But it's fixed and I'm happy.
