Several independent bug reports (bug 390624, bug 309720 and probably bug 364196 too) report the same problem with starting the libchipcard daemon. I think this needs to be investigated more deeply. Hence I nominated this bug for Jaunty.

Unfortunately I have no Ubuntu system at hands right now.

Typo: I intended to refer to bug 390720 (not 309720) in my previous comment. Sorry.

I have the same problem, and since no decent log has been supplied yet here's my two cents:

 /etc/ sudo sh -x /etc/init.d/libchipcard-tools start
+ PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
+ DAEMON=/usr/sbin/chipcardd4
+ PIDFILE=/var/run/chipcard/chipcardd4.pid
+ DAEMON_ARGS=--pidfile /var/run/chipcard/chipcardd4.pid --exit-on-error
+ NAME=chipcardd4
+ DESC=libchipcard daemon
+ test -x /usr/sbin/chipcardd4
+ set -e
+ echo -n Starting libchipcard daemon:
Starting libchipcard daemon: + check_var_run
+ [ ! -d /var/run/chipcard ]
+ start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --pidfile /var/run/chipcard/chipcardd4.pid --user chipcard --chuid chipcard --exec /usr/sbin/chipcardd4 -- --pidfile /var/run/chipcard/chipcardd4.pid --exit-on-error

/etc/ start-stop-daemon --start --pidfile /var/run/chipcard/chipcardd4.pid --user chipcard --chuid chipcard --exec /usr/sbin/chipcardd4 -- --pidfile /var/run/chipcard/chipcardd4.pid --exit-on-error
start-stop-daemon: Unable to set gid to 115 (Operation not permitted)

hope this helps

With libchipcard 5.0.0-1 in Ubuntu natty, there is no libchipcard daemon anymore that could be started by the init script. Hence I mark this bug as "Fix Released".

1. it is amazing that there are no date stamps in this report.

2. it is amazing that it has taken this long to address this report.

3. as it's been ages since this was filed i do not remember it well and
the description has been ommitted from the email message. however,
i suspect that if you check the description, or even read
what is available in the email message more carefully you will
find that the reported bug was not with libchipcard itself, but with
other packages that expected to find libchipcard but did not, and
that the result was system lock-up.

4. while there may be a good reason for closing this issue, the stated
reaason is not it. in a sense the stated reason for closing the
report simply restates half the problem. that is, that a particular
package is no longer part of the distribution. it does not address
the question of other pacakages acting as if it still is.

5. as usual the good folks ostensibly fixing bugs at ubuntu seem to be
more interested in closing bug reports than actaully fixing bugs.
this is why i no longer use or recommend ubuntu.
