Bug Description

Plugging headphone on my laptop zv5421ea doesn't desactivate the sound of the baffles.

It is a very annoying problem when you want to hear music in public places (train, etc).

Update: It also happens with Dell Inspiron 6400

That sounds like a hardware problem to me. The headphone jacks are usually wired to take over from the speakers. Does it happen on any other OS?

No, the headphone jacks work perfectly with windows. It seems that it is a problem that only exists with Linux.

I found the solution : the "headphone jack sense" must be activated in the gnome-volume-control (accessible in the notify area). Once the option is activated, the headphones are well detected.

Users of the nforce3 chips appear to have this kind of problem.

Sounds like you've got the problem solved then. Plugging the headphones in correctly mutes the speakers now?

Should that option be enabled by default for the HP Pavilion zv5421EA then?

Yes, it mutes the headphones. I think it should be enabled by default, so the problem is solved.

Could you please test this on the Edgy Beta to see if the defaults are still incorrect? If they are, then they should be changed. If not, then the problem has been fixed already!

Thanks

I think this is enough information to mark the bug confirmed. I'm also changing the affected package to linux-source-2.6.17 because it appears in Edgy Beta.

Thank you for the bug report, hopefully it will be resolved soon. It's in the hands of the kernel team now.

Turns out this belongs in alsa-driver. Can you still confirm this issue with a feisty livecd?

If so, please provide the information requested at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems in separate attachments. Thanks

Well, It isn't possible. My laptop was stolen and the new one I have doesn't have any sound problem. I'm sorry.

I experience this exact problem with an Inspiron 6400 too. It does not happen in all cases, but it is rare when it's working. Happens in three ways:
1. When I plug in the headphone, both the speaker and the headphone are muted
2. When I plug out the the headphone(which worked properly) the speaker is still muted.(plugging back the headphone works once again)
3. When I plug in headphone jack, both the speaker and the headphone is working.
