[jaunty] vlc segfault on stop

Bug Description

Binary package hint: vlc

vlc segfaults everytime I play a video, then press the stop button. It doesn't seem to matter what the video is (mpeg2, mkv, etc). Also segfaults if I just let the video play until the end (when it auto stops).

Callstack looks like a jump to a bad address from clone(), which looks very similar to the call stack in this mythfrontend bug (which I also see):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/mythbuntu/+bug/366002

I am running pulse audio, and nvidia binary drivers.

Apport retracing service (apport) wrote : Crash report cannot be processed

Thank you for your report!

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate an useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
at the time of the report:

libavutil49: installed version None, latest version: 3:0.svn20090303-1ubuntu6
libavcodec52: installed version None, latest version: 3:0.svn20090303-1ubuntu6

Please upgrade your system to the latest package versions. If you still
encounter the crash, please file a new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!

uninstalling pulseaudio causes the crash to go away. (more info in 366002).

reinstalled pulseaudio, problem returned.

installed libavutil49 & libavcodec52 (as suggested by Apport retracing service), and the problem went away.
My machine had -unstripped- versions of those libraries installed. But even after
re-installing the -unstripped- versions, then problem won't reproduce.

uninstalling the unstripped versions of those libraries, installing the standard ones and rebooting the computer worked for me. (i believe 365638 could be the same bug as this.)

maybe vlc dependencies need to be adjusted so it depends on libraries that work and conflicts with the unstripped versions. i haven't bothered reinstalling the unstripped ones since i got it working or tried playing any dvds yet so not totally sure why the unstripped ones were installed to begin with and what they were needed for.

removing those unstripped libraries was a temporary fix. issue started occuring again without even rebooting machine. removing pulseaudio appears to be a permanent solution for me so far.

I upgraded to 9.04 from 8.10 on 30/05/09; I waited until then, as I had the idea that any bugs would have been fixed...

I followed the steps as mentioned by LeeWells, but I had the same result as kit. So I uninstalled pulseaudio, & Myth seems OK now.

I experienced the problem of the frontend crashing in the following circumstances, but I suppose that all of these go through the same process that triggers the crash:
1. on Live TV, using the pop-up menu, trying to change channels (fortunately, I only use Live TV rarely).
2. exiting from watching a recorded TV program, using the KB escape button (whether at the end or not).
3. trying to delete from the pop-up menu that displays at the end of a recorded TV program.

(I use the keyboard for everything, as my "Microsoft" remote stopped working some time after I installed Mythbuntu 8.04, possibly when I changed to 8.10...).
