Bug Description

There appears to be a problem in the reiserfs support in linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic.

Doing a package update after updating to the 9.04 RC resulted in a number of i/o errors for /usr/lib32 (don't think the location was relevant). Even doing an "ls /usr/lib32", generated an error. Rebooting to the Intrepid linux-image-2.6.27-14-generic allowed the update to complete but a number of other things like CPU frequency scaling now don't work.

This seems likely to cause data loss and needs to be fixed. It may be a multi-core thing as I have seen some commentary around this on the web.

As a further data point, I built a custom 2.6.29.1 kernel (source from kernel.org) using the /boot/config-2.6.28-11-generic file and "make oldconfig".

This boots fine and doesn't show any issues with the file system. Rebooting into the 2.6.28-11 kernel shipped with the 9.04 RC results in filesystem errors filling the messages file again.

HTH,

Mark.

Hi MarkS,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 362926

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Machine is now running Lucid RC and seems OK, The filesystem corruption never occurred on the released version of 9.04, only on the RC. So I guess that some kernel update fixed it.
