As a further data point, I built a custom 2.6.29.1 kernel (source from kernel.org) using the /boot/config-2.6.28-11-generic file and "make oldconfig".

This boots fine and doesn't show any issues with the file system. Rebooting into the 2.6.28-11 kernel shipped with the 9.04 RC results in filesystem errors filling the messages file again.
