As per instructions here, I removed everything associated with "Acroread" using the Synaptics Package Manager and then I used Ubuntu Tweak (the newest version, installed this morning) to remove every remaining trace of Acroread (as well as everything else found there which was available for removing).

Then I reinstalled Acroread from the terminal. It worked. I then went back into the Synaptics Package Manager and tried to reinstall several additional options, including the plugins and the reader option.

The ones which appear to be giving problems are < acroread-I10n-de > and < acroread-debian-files > (I have both the medibuntu and the debian-multimedia repositories installed). When I attempted to upgrade, these two files appeared in the "Broken" files section so I uninstalled them.

Everything I have selected now appears to be functioning properly.

Thanks for all the helpful posts here. The Ubuntu community is positively the finest community in existence and, each time I go here for advice or help, and I get it, it just makes me very thankful that I took the plunge last year to install, learn, and use Ubuntu Linux.

Thanks again!

Same issue here (9.04). Acroread upgrade failed, and a "partial dist-upgrade" failed over and over. I solved it by a "sudo apt-get remove acroread acroread-debian-files;sudo apt-get install acroread".

Not sure if it directly relates, but somewhere between the attempted partial dist-upgrade and the replacement of acroread, "libgl1-mesa-glx" and/or "libgl1-mesa-dri" were replaced by "libgl1-mesa-swx11". This was noticable in the visual effects; for example, window borders became black instead of transparent. I reinstalled "libgl1-mesa-glx" and "libgl1-mesa-dri" using synaptic which seem to have restored the visual effects.

According to the comments it seems to me that this bug is caused of the "single" update of the acroread package to version 9.1.0-*.
Strong hint to that: Other packages of the acroread family are not available from the medibuntu repository at the moment (most likely because they are being updated). Be patient or try the workaround, as they work fine.

Lionel, cab you say a bit more about this, as you are a member of the medibuntu packaging team?

This 9.1.0 package doesn't come from Medibuntu, but from Canonical's partner repository.
I already removed our i386 packages from the mirrors, to prevent people from installing them (so hopefully they'll install directly the new one from Canonical and avoid this upgrade failure).
I can't do much more on my end: the maintainer[*] needs to upload a new revision that conflicts with/replaces acroread-debian-files (that's a really easy fix), if he wants to provide a clean upgrade path from Medibuntu.

[*] https://launchpad.net/~brian-thomason, who isn't apparently subscribed to acroread's bug reports...

But the thing is that the "partial upgrade" removes the acroread package during the cleaning step.
And I am wondering why it needs to install ash ????
