I confirm this bug too, on both restart / shutdown.
I need to manually shut down my laptop (a Toshiba P300-19F), by pushing for 5secs the power button.

We have same problem with DELL optiplex GX 620 and SIEMENS ESprimo E5915 with a upgrade from ububtu 8.10.

In the past we have upgraded ubuntu 8.10 from 8.04 and we got the same bug. We fixed it by reinstalling
DBUS NETWORK-MANAGER NETWORK-MANAGER-GNOME but this time doesn't work with the 9.04 release,
but the bug has been fixed on the 9.04 beta release.

We have noted so that when the problem occurs the sound ( ALSA PCM) is disabled when we restart the station.

we have just finished to test with a fresh install of Unbuntu 9.04 it's OK . Like with 8.10 the bug occurs only with a update or upgrade.

After a fresh Xubuntu 9.04 network install from mini.iso it was ok but after a while my problems begun.
I'm not sure what changes were made to get into the state nm-system-settings: SCPlugin-ifupdown: devices removed (udi: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/net_00_1a_92_XX_XX_XX)

My fix was to remove network-manager-gnome and network-manager to avoid the system hung while shutting down my computer. The solution works for me since I do not need any GUI to configure my network settings anyway.

sudo aptitude purge network-manager network-manager-gnome

so i had this problem mentioned above when nfsmount was used and i tried to restart from my gnome console. the system hung on this message and i really waited quite a while.

i use nfsmount because i got real ugly messages whenever i try to mount an nfs share as usual (a.b.c.d:/stuff /Stuff). nfsmount mounts the share with no issues, so i used that. then i started getting this error..

to solve any potential nfsmount issues and get back to just using mount, try:

sudo apt-get install portmap nfs-common

then try doing a regular mount, not an nfsmount.

for more info try here:

ubuntu workstation/desktop 9.04 very vanilla

i have the same problem, starting from few days ago. I thought it happened because I installed or removed something, so I have been trying to reverse everything I have done. However, the problem persists:(

I also have this issue, but I ran

sudo aptitude purge network-manager network-manager-gnome

as suggested, then manually configured my network. The problem persists.

I'm having the same problem since 8.10. Also after a fresh install of Jaunty the problem persists.
As mentioned above, after shutting down manually, sometimes, because my machine hangs-up before
shutting down or rebooting, there is no sound upon restart. It could be fixed with alsamixer and then
increasing the volume on the PCM channel.
There is no clean shutting down, or reboot, you new to press the power button 5 sec.
Is this problem related with acer-acpi?
Acer 7520-5656 amd athlon X2 nvidia 7000M, atheros wifi,
ubuntu jaunty amd64
Linux lethargica 2.6.28-14-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 8 07:41:18 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Any ideas?
cheers
