We have same problem with DELL optiplex GX 620 and SIEMENS ESprimo E5915 with a upgrade from ububtu 8.10.

In the past we have upgraded ubuntu 8.10 from 8.04 and we got the same bug. We fixed it by reinstalling
DBUS NETWORK-MANAGER NETWORK-MANAGER-GNOME but this time doesn't work with the 9.04 release,
but the bug has been fixed on the 9.04 beta release.

We have noted so that when the problem occurs the sound ( ALSA PCM) is disabled when we restart the station.
