Bug Description

System freezes especially while downloading big files. While downloading the 2.6.29 source code to get the driver my system freezes two times. Changing to console isn't possible.

If I ping my router at least 10% of the packets get lost. Surfing is slow most likely because of the packet losing.

If I use the 2.6.29 mainline kernel from ppa or install the linux-backport-modules the problems are fixed. I really think that a newer ath5k should be moved from backport to standard kernel. Otherwise Atheros users will have fun but maybe only my chipset has this severe problems but according to #ubuntu+1 I am not the only one who needs the backports.

There is one problem with the backport ath5k module. It can't connect to the european wlan channel 12 and 13 but the Ubuntu 2.6.28 one and the one of 2.6.29 can, so please fix this. Is there a separate bug report needed?

Bug #347848 seems to be similar but in my case the mouse can't be moved.
Bug #341952 too but I didn't got the "ath5k phy0: noise floor calibration timeout" message.

The backport module also makes connections to hidden ssids possible which wasn't the case before afaik.

Btw. no crash so far and my WLAN connection is rock stable. Backport module could be transfered directly to Kernel imho if the ignoring of the additional European WLAN channels wasn't there.

The report for the missing european wlan channel is Bug #353973.

The purpose of the linux-backports-modules package is for this very reason of needing an updated version of a driver. The ath5k will unfortunately not be backported to the main Ubuntu kernel so please continue to use the driver from lbm if that resolves the issue you are seeing. Otherwise your other options would be to update to the latest Karmic development kernel which will have this newer version included. For now I'm marking this Fix Released against linux-backports-modules.
