Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-backports-modules-jaunty-generic

I need the ath5k from Linux backport modules because the 2.6.28 crashes my system regularly and looses packets. With the default module from 2.6.28 access points using the European wlan channels 12 and 13 are shown but not with the backport module.
If I use the 2.6.29 kernel from Ubuntu mainline repository the channels are also shown.

 SHELL=/bin/bash
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8

The problem could be fixed through the two follow commands but of course this is no distribution fix. I don't know how the standard modules handles this.

sudo -s
echo 'options lbm_cw_cfg80211 ieee80211_regdom="EU"' > /etc/modprobe.d/regdom.conf

This is not a bug in the linux-meta package, moving to the linux package.

The builtin modules use the CRDA framework, the LBM modules do not appear to be using it. It is possible they should be.

I haven't installed the LBM modules, but the channel 12/13 is also missing after startup with the
"default"? ath5k kernel module
filename: /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ath5k/ath5k.ko
version: 0.6.0 (EXPERIMENTAL)

To fix this, i did:
ifdown wlan0
modprobe -r ath5k
modprobe ath5k
(if up wlan0)

After that, all 14 channels are active.
see attachment ath5k-channel-fix.txt for details
I think, it is not a good solution, but it works (e.g. /etc/rc.local)

Anyone knows the correct solution for this bug?

Hi unggnu,

Can you just test and confirm if this issue remains with the actively developed Karmic 9.10 Alpha release? It contains a 2.6.31 based kernel. ISO images are available for testing at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . Please let us know your results. Thanks.

I can confirm that it works in current Karmic.

Marking this Fix Released for Karmic. Due to the fact this is resolved in Karmic and there is a noted workaround for Jaunty I'm inclined to think this will not qualify for a Stable Release Update to Jaunty. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates for more info.
