Globetrotter M040x 3G Modem(Option N.V. "GTM382 W") - Support unclear in 8.10 and 9.04

This 3G Modem, found in several mini laptops including Sony Vaio VGN-TT2, is not picked up by NetworkManager.

The device, as reported in Windows (where it works) is a Globetrotter M040x 3G Modem. This however is in fact a Option N.V. "GTM382 W" (http://www.option.com/en/support/sof...382w/articles/).

This devices is listed as "Works but requires some hacks" @ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NetworkManager/Hardware/3G (search for GTM382)

This device does not work in either 8.10 or (pre-release) 9.04.

It would be great if it could work out of the box in 9.04, or at least if these "hacks" could be documented in a little more detail; "Requires turning off ZeroCD plus some HAL tweaks; ColinWatson will push these upstream " isnt really enough for a user to work out.

I dont see any sign at all of any sort of modem here, or even a unrecognised device!

Here are links to the two patch sets I wrote for this device. The kernel patch was fairly uncontroversial, but for some reason hasn't been merged as far as I can see; the HAL patch needed more work and in any case HAL is deprecated now so it probably needs to move to udev-extras or something for future releases.

My Option GTM382 is a later revision: 1.7.0.0Hd — and its id is 0af0:7601 and not 0af0:7501. Don't know if it changes anything.
It is detected with 2.6.28-14 kernel and NetworkManager 0.7.1~rc4.1 from the default repo, but NetworkManager cannot connect to the network. Sometimes the service even stops when trying to connect.
It works OK though with NM 0.7.1.git.5.something from NetworkManager PPA (https://launchpad.net/~network-manager/+archive/ppa)

I've got a TT11LN/B; it's got an usb id 0af0:7601 also, and is working out of the box under Karmic alpha 4.

The only strange thing is that the battery has to be in the laptop; otherwise it won't even appear using "lsusb"...

Note: I've opened bug #414833, as echoing "0" on /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/wwanpower doesn't turn the 3G modem off and, in my oppinion, it's wasting battery when not used.

I think I experience the same problem on a Sony Vaio VGN-P11Z.

The card is only detected by network-manager/lsusb if previously enabled in Windows.
Option GTM382 0af0:7601

If detected network-manager (0.7.1.git.5.272c6a626-0ubuntu1) still fails to connect
on Jaunty with kernel 2.6.28-15.

Just doublechecked - with Jaunty it doesn't work - with Karmic connecting through Network-Manager does work.

Still - if disabled in Win the device doesn't even show using lsusb and
/sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/wwanpower is 1 regardless of the hardware switch being on or off.

I had the same problem with my sony vaio VGN-P19VN.
Moving to Karmic (newer kernel) solved the problem, but since a couple of days, I have to use Windows to make the modem visible after a power down.

I do not know what caused the problem to rea-appear; I see two possible explanations:
- my normal daily apt-get dist-upgrade introduced the problem
- an upgrade of the BIOS caused the problem to reappear.

Unfortunately, I cannot reinstall the old BIOS to test

Rebooting an older kernel / jaunty system does not help to get the modem back in lsusb
