I had the same problem with my sony vaio VGN-P19VN.
Moving to Karmic (newer kernel) solved the problem, but since a couple of days, I have to use Windows to make the modem visible after a power down.
I do not know what caused the problem to rea-appear; I see two possible explanations:
- my normal daily apt-get dist-upgrade introduced the problem
- an upgrade of the BIOS caused the problem to reappear.
Unfortunately, I cannot reinstall the old BIOS to test
