Bug Description

Upgraded from 8.10 64-bit to 9.04-64 bit alpha 5,
upon restart could not load GDM screen, then proceeded to error window stating that graphics driver could not be found and asked if want to boot into safe mode or configure.
Selection the configure or use default options did nothing and brought back to original screen.
When one selects to boot into safe mode, error message states that screen :0 was busy and whether it should look for another screen.
After selecting yes, it boots into safe graphics mode and the screen resolutution is way off, to the point that I cannot do work on the computer.
I tried to install ati-catalyst center64 at driver but when logged in it keeps saying that it cannot find the driver.
I check proprietary drivers and the one in use but deactivated is some ati firegl drive.
I tried editing xorg.conf to use the ati and radeonhd drivers, but none had an effect.
I am using an ati radeon hd 3650 graphics card on a sony vaio fw290.

From Xorg.0.log:

Fatal server error:
Couldn't find valid PLL dividers

The issue is fixed in upstream http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-ati/commit/?id=592bcac52f113a95923a8f1cb8427e7552d5670b

Thanks for the log. I think this would need to be reported upstream on bugs.freedesktop.org. Please go ahead if you can, otherwise we will do it when we find the time.

I don't see a 20090311.945ccbbd for jaunty and I cannot get the tar file
installed. The ./configure command won't work for me.

Do you have a deb file for that package, or maybe you can tell me what I am
doing wrong with the tarball?

Thanks.

I am not sure what tarball you try to install, but please have a second look in the PPA. Maybe you checked before the binaries were published? If the builds are not done yet, there are small icons saying they are waiting to be built or are being built. But there is also some minutes delay between finished build and the binary debs appearing.

I just checked again and the debs were there. I downloaded and installed the debs. I added "ati" to xorg.conf. I rebooted again to black screen. This time, it would not boot to an interface without vesa.

I think I got the install correct. It looks like the commit ID is in the file.

I attached the Xorg.0.log.old.

So, in layman's terms, what's the story on this issue? Do you think you are near the solution, or is this just a tough situation?

I appreciate your efforts.

Well these logs show that the PLL issue is solved and you now have a completely different issue:

Please file a new bug, it has a good chance to get fixed if we can provide the right debug information to the upstream developers.

  • xorg.conf Edit (1.0 KiB, text/plain; name="xorg.conf"; charset="UTF-8")

Sorry for responding so late, I was away for some time.

I have installed 6.11.0.99+git20090311.945ccbbd version, but "grep
commit /var/log/Xorg.0.log" doesn't return anything.

This might be because I do all that from the LiveCD. I have attached
my /etc/X11/xorg.conf, I guess there must be something included.

I look forward to your advise.

Stephan

If you update the driver running the live CD, you must restart X afterwards. The simplest way is to log out and in again. You can also switch to a virtual console with ctrl-alt-F1, then run "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop" to stop X. Then you can edit /etc/xorg.conf if needed or whatever, and run X with "startx". Or you can restart gdm with "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start". But startx will not activate "failsafeX" if something goes wrong, so it can be less confusing than gdm.

This seems to have been fixed now, but a comment in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/341681 says:
"Also with 2GB of RAM the PLL rd parameter is 12, but with 4GB of RAM the PPL rd parameter is 1023. Maybe the PLL divider bug wasn't really a bug after all..."

BTW, for reference, the new "resetting engine" bug was filed as bug 20645.

I am having the same problem ("Couldn't find valid PLL dividers").
I run Acer TM4600 laptop with Ati Mobility X700,Xubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-18.
Tried all versions from 6.12.192 up to 6.13.0.
Attaching xorg log.

Revision history for this message
matej_bb (matej-bb) wrote :

I have done a regression test, and the last release that works fine is 6.12.4. From 6.12.191 up, xorg log produces the aforementioned PLL error.
But let me explain further:
I was trying to upgrade "only" because with X700 at full clock, this laptop's fan is spinning almost all the time, even when CPU is idle.
In Windows, I solved it by Powerplay - the "battery" option (lowest clock), since I my apps normally do not require much GPU processing power. That way, the fan kicked in very rarely, almost never!
Now in Ubuntu, I spent many days trying to underclock the X700. The version marking of xf86-video-ati confused me a bit, because there are the 6.12.3 and 6.12.4 releases which do not appear in log view on the project page. There is only 6.12.2 and then 6.12.191.
According to the logs, I found out that radeon_pm.c file with ForceLowPowerMode was added in 6.12.2, but when I look into the 6.12.2 official release, the radeon_pm.c, nor the ForceLowPowerMode option is there. It is not even in 6.12.3 nor 6.12.4. It first appears in 6.12.191, which, unfortunately, does not run for me because PLL error. And, what is very weird to me, in the subsequent releases the radeon_pm.c and ForceLowPowerMode options are gone! And I was not able to find the reason anywhere in the logs.
Now how I fixed this issue: I browsed the log of diffs, opened several of them before 6.12.191 and looked for the one that actually has the radeon_pm.c. I finally found and successfully tested the version called "xf86-video-ati-efa0825a86a8dc0f03ebb42c576ed26189e9d4bb". Inside this file, it is marked as 6.12.2. (But official 6.12.2 to 6.12.4 do not have radeon_pm.c! ) This version works flawlessly for me, no PLL errors, and most importantly, what makes me most happy is this line in xorg log (attached):

(II) RADEON(0): Force Low Power Mode Enabled

I did make one modification though. I knew from playing with Powerplay in Windows that the card works stable until approximately 105MHz (normally about 350MHz). But in radeon_pm.c, the sclk was only divided by 2, that means the card was working at about 175MHz, still unnecesarily high and noisy for me. So I changed the "sclk / 2" and "mclk / 2" to "sclk / 3" and "mclk / 3" in the ForceLowPowerMode section. Now the laptop is finally as quiet as it was in Windows! :)
So besides the PLL error, what is very strange to me is why this ForceLowPowerMode option is not available in further releases after 6.12.191... ?
