There have been a large number of bugfixes with the latest VLC release, 1.0.1-1ubuntu1. Can you reproduce your issue with this latest version? You can test this in Ubuntu Karmic, or Ubuntu Jaunty with the MOTU Media PPA at https://launchpad.net/~motumedia/+archive/ppa . Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty happy with Gnome-mplayer which does not have any of these issues.. So I don't think I'll bother to install it to find some other issues. Anyway, I'd recommend you do switch to plain mplayer unless you have a need for complex playlists - it sure is faster.

I am also experiencing this problem. I have tried the ppa given by Hew and the text still doesn't display. This is with a ttf thai font set with the ass file in UTF-8 encoding.

JB, glad I could help. I'm happy that your project is moving forward. As for anybody's private use I'd say SMplayer is quite a better choice. It is a build up on the mplayer base from which most video player projects have taken. It does not have this subtitle issue. Also, to balance on the less bugs side it has quite a few extra features like remembering where the movie was stopped and resume from that point forward. It works both on Windows and Linux. And it hasn't even reached version 1. So probably the VLC team has rushed things just to label it stable. But that's their call. I wish that by version 2 VLC will have this playback issues solved and could really push some features of its own. See you in a few years!

Thank you for posting this bug.

Does this problem occur in Lucid?

Dunno. I have moved over to smplayer and it was such a break. No bugs so far, but a few improvements (like remembering where the movie stopped playing). Sorry, can't help.
