Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) with all updates released as of February 28, 2009.

Every time when I right click on a WMV, MKV or MPG file and select Properties, Nautilus restarts and a GStreamer error appears!

The Properties window never appears, so I can not set any options to the above mentioned files.

Moreover, there are no thumbnails for the above mentioned files.

Totem doesn't play the above mentioned files, it freezes on WMV files and it closes in 2-3 seconds after opening MKV or MPEG-2 files!

Thank you for your report!

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate an useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
at the time of the report:

liblaunchpad-integration1: installed version 0.1.22, latest version: 0.1.23
libtheora0: installed version 1.0~beta3-1, latest version: 1.0-2

Please upgrade your system to the latest package versions. If you still
encounter the crash, please file a new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!

This bug is still present in Jaunty Alpha 5 x8_64, fully patched as of todays date. This bug has been changed to Confirmed and needs further investigation.

Great... I'll let you know if it's still there in Alpha 6. In the mean time... I was obligated (as you can see from the post above yours) to fill in the bug again... here -> https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/337391

If you want... you can erase that entry... or whatever you think is best!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You have reported a crash that actually happened in the libavcodec or libavformat library. In order to be able to actually fix this bug, we must be able to:

1. Reproduce it;
2. Check if it happens with the latest version; and
3. Understand where it actually crashes.

You can help with the first point by attaching an example file to this bug report. Please note that a proper attachment is preferred over a link to some remote site. Remote sites that are password protected or otherwise restricted (services like rapidshare.com) are absolutely not acceptable. If you're file is too large, try to reproduce with the first few MB only. See http://ffmpeg.org/bugreports.html section "Submitting Sample Media" for guidelines.

I've attached a WMV file. Once you will place the file on your desktop for example, you will see a Gstreamer error. Please right click on the file and go to Properties.... Nautilus will immediately restart itself... or it will freeze for a few seconds, then restart.

Hi

Thanks for all your assistance Marius but please do not reply to me directly
off-list. Just send your replies to the list so that everyone gets them (and
so that my gmail filters do their job!)

Thanks
Blake

Sebastien... I've just updated my system and the bug was not fixed... it gives me a "nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV"...

Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help you fix this bug :)

Remeber that thumbnails for this files are also not created!

do you get the issue when playing the file in totem too? does ffplay plays it correctly?

Revision history for this message
Marius Nestor (marius-nestor) wrote :

Yes, it's all related... Totem, GStreamer, Nautilus, ffmpeg:

- The files do not play at all in Totem.... When you open them, Totem freezes.
- Nautilus fails because GStreamer/ffmpeg can't render the thumbnails (please see the video I've recorded last night here -> https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gstreamer0.10/+bug/337396).

The files that won't play (that I've discovered until now) are: WMV, MKV, MP4, MPEG-2/AVC.

AVI and MPG are OK!

ffplay plays the files correctly.
