php5-cli + PHP bug 42682: stream_select() indicates bad number of readable descriptors

I'm running into the problem where stream_select() indicates bad number of readable descriptors as in PHP bug #42682:

  http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=42682

Steps to reproduce:

- Run code as in PHP bug 42682 link
- Output is: "select : 0, r=1, w=0, e=0"
- Output should be as in PHP bug 42682

Intrepid is OK:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

$ apt-cache policy php5-cli
php5-cli:
  Installed: 5.2.6-2ubuntu4.1
  Candidate: 5.2.6-2ubuntu4.1
  Version table:
