Bug Description

I've installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my computer. I use Static IP (routed modem).

System->Preferences->Network Configuration->Wired tab->edit (Auto eth0):
"connect automatically" checked.
"system settings" checked.

Next step: ipv4 Settings tab-->added IP: 10.1.1.4, mask: 255.0.0.0, gateway: 10.1.1.1 and DNS: 10.1.1.1 and click OK.
Connection established.

Problem: When I restart my computer, these configurations aren't remembered. I have to configure again.

Solution I had (not the best): change data in /etc/network/interfaces and restart the computer. After restarted, erase what was added in interfaces and in Network Configuration will appear Wired Connection 1 (and not Auto eth0). And so I fill again the IP, mask, gateway and DNS. Restart the computer--> everything is OK. Now, the data is saved.

A couple questions:
1. Exactly which settings are forgotten? Are the two checkboxes remembered or forgotten?
2. What did you change in /etc/network/interfaces ?

Changed in network-manager:
status: New → Incomplete

Hi,

1. forgotten: IP, gateway, mask, DNS and the method (after restarted,
Ubuntu shows again "Automatic (DHCP)". Both of checkboxes are kept.

2. "Interfaces" before (default):

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

    "Interfaces" after:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet static
address 10.1.1.102
netmask 255.0.0.0
gateway 10.1.1.1

Auto eth0

Strangely, with this change the connection name also changed from Auto
eth0 to Wired Connection 1. Maybe if the connection name is changed,
Ubuntu save the settings without having to change Interfaces. A fact to
be analyzed.

I believe I have a similar problem in karmic - I just tried several times to change a profile from DHCP to Manual, typing one (or two) IPs into the Addresses list. After having clicked on Apply and reopening the configuration dialog, it's changed back to DHCP and all the addresses are gone.

Hi Martin.

My problem,as described, was resolved in version 9.04. Have you tried
changing the name of your connection? (from auto eth0 to Wired Connection 1,
if wired). This was my solution in Intrepid. I have not checked the version
9.10.
