Bug Description

Binary package hint: flashblock

Since upgrading to firefox 3.0.5, flash movies on certain sites no longer show but only show a blank panel.
One example of this is youtube.

This only seemed to happen in firefox.

The version of flashblock was that installed as part of ubuntu. No updates were currently available. By uninstalling the packaged version and installing flashblock from the firefox extensions, both flash and flashblock work fine.

Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

 flashblock:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1.3.10a~snapshot20080611-0ubuntu2

Hi,
I see you're using intrepid right ?

There is a recent version in jaunty to be tested and then to be merged back to previous release of ubuntu...

I was experiencing this issue as well. I installed the latest flashblock from Jaunty, and now the problem has changed. If I go to http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/ the shockwave object displays a flashblock "play" button, however the flash object does not. Instead, it shows a blank flash box, with a full flash context menu. When I was running the intrepid version of flashblock, I got a similar behaviour, however the context menu contained a "movie not loaded" message which is no longer present. On some sites, such as miniclip.com, flashblock appears to work correctly. I have no idea what is going on, I will try uninstalling the package and installing the xpi directly.

Try using the new version of flashblock -> https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/433

Ubuntu ships an older version that is more compatible to older browsers.

Is there any reason why this is packaged with Ubuntu? there are thousands of add-ons but only a handful that are packaged.

Would it not make more sense that these be removed from the Ubuntu packaging system and that users allow the browser to add and maintain the compatibility of firefox add-ons?

@ismoore999: you can do that already, that package doesn't stop you. and for installation purposes its great to have a package for it, so you can just install firefox + flashblock when you're on an older pc. therefore this is great for customizations of ubuntu.

It's still happening. :-)

I'm using FF 3.0.5 under Ubuntu 8.10 and upgraded to flashblock 1.5.8, at which point youtube videos would not play after clicking on the "play" icon provided by flashblock - the viewport simply cleared to all black and stayed that way. I upgraded to flashblock 1.5.9 and restart FF, and nothing has changed.

I also have infoRSS 1.1.4.2, Media Converter 1.0.2, Save Image in Fodler 1.2.5, Session Manager 0.6.4.4, Shelve 1.15, Tab X 2.0, Tree Style Tab 0.7.2009031701, Ubuntu Firefox Modifications 0.6 enabled.

I checked out the Adobe Flash plugin - I had version 10.0.15.something installed.
After downloading the latest for Linux (10.0.22.87) and installing via debconf, it didn't seem to get installed. So I ran update manager and updated 309 various packages, one of which included the Adobe flashplayer and the package called flashplayer-nonfree, and restarting FF, by visiting http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ it reported (via a flash frame, that required a
click to activate due to Flashblock - as you'd expect - and which was one Flash thing that always seemed to work) that I now really had 10.0.22.87 flashplayer installed, and it's now working again.

Hope this helps others.
