Bug Description

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

Originally reported in a private e-mail to Daniel Hahler regarding the DEB in his PPA:

---
The problem I'm having (starting with a new .VirtualBox directory
anyway, when testing with Damn Small Linux since its little ;) is that
when it boots up and I go to click inside it, I get the normal capture
mouse message dialogue, BUT instead of working right when I press the
Capture button, it doesn't capture it.

The only way I can get it to work is to check the 'do not show this
message again' box and the NEXT time I click inside the virtualized OS
it actually captures it.
---
Is this a regression from 2.0.2, which is currently in Ubuntu?
---
I just installed 2.0.2 from pool DEBs and [...] the fail to capture bug
is in there too.
---
The good thing about this is that 2.0.4 did not cause a regression here
then, but please file a bug report about it in Launchpad and/or on the
upstream bug tracker

I cannot reproduce this using 2.0.4:
I've re-enabled the popup dialog (by removing the """ExtraDataItem name="GUI/SuppressMessages"""" line from VirtualBox.xml) and when clicking into a Ubuntu Intrepid virtual box (without guest additions AFAIK), the mouse gets captured as expected when clicking "Capture" (and does not get captured when clicking "Cancel").

Just to get a really clean environment to test, I burned the latest Intrepid daily LiveCD ISO available to me (20081028.2) and booted into it (twice actually; the first time was to verify that the disk was a good copy and it said it was :). I then installed virtualbox-ose from universe* (2.0.4-dfsg-0ubuntu1) and used the Damn Small Linux 4.4.4 ISO image from my HD and unfortunately, I am still getting this bug.

Now, just to double check, I shut down DSL (clicking the X in the VirtualBox window) and booted an ISO of Hardy (8.04.1)** from the mounted HD and tried it there and the bug appears again (and like in my previous report, the only work around is to check the 'don't show the message again' box and then click inside the window again).

Can you try in a LiveCD environment to try to confirm?

== Footnotes that are Unrelated to the Bug ==

* and of course, because software libre is so kick-ass I am doing this (as well as listening to patas_de_trapo.oga from the Examples dir) all in RAM (using only just over half a GiB I might add) on a computer from 2005 and it is far more stable than... a certain OS sold in stores shall we say (see Bug #1 for more info ;)

** which, even as I type this in Firefox with multiple tabs open, only is bringing me up to 3/4 of a GiB of RAM. I really can't wait to get a netbook with Ubuntu preloaded :)

Son of a gun!

I am seeing exact same with 8.10 64bit Ubuntu as Host.
I disabled the popup and it properly captures now.

The guests I have tesed with same results are: FC 9 and 10

I'm running PCLinuxOS 2007 under an Ubuntu 8.10 32-bit host in VirtualBox 2. I see this as well. Unchecking the "Don't show the message again" box fixes the issue.

I can confirm this behaviour.

I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 with the latest version of VB (2.1.0). I was not able to capture my mouse until I checked the box not to show the dialog any longer and <i>then</i> clicked the "Capture" button. Now it works as expected.

(I am running this on a Dell Dimension 8300 in 32bit.)

I'm setting the status to Triaged.

Can you please forward the bug upstream (http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Bugtracker) and link it here ("Also affects project"), please?
I've searched the existing tickes for "capture", but could not find a matching ticket.
Thank you.

Since James confirmed it for 2.1.0 (non-OSE I suppose), it's not likely to be fixed yet.

I'm having a simular problem, but in my case it prevents me from using the mouse in the virtual machine at all!
(until I have the GuestAddions installed)

pressed "capture" does not capture the mouse, and checking the "don't show this message again" box doesn't change anything. Also as soon as I click the VirtualBox window, the message appears again...

After installing the GuestAdditions, the problem is (of course) nolonger an issue

Oh btw, I'm using ubuntu LTS 8.04 an VirtualBox 2.1.2, i'm running virtualbox as non-root and verified that all files in ~/.VirtualBox are owned by me.

 (downloaded the deb package yesterday;
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/2.1.2/virtualbox-2.1_2.1.2-41885_Ubuntu_hardy_i386.deb)

Also I don't see any """ExtraDataItem name="GUI/SuppressMessages"""" line in VirtualBox.xml being added.

I can confirm this behavior as well. I am using Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS. The workaround is appreciated. Thank you!--Mark Appier

Thank you for posting this bug.

As per comment #6, no upstream bug is linked. As well, virtualbox and Ubuntu have had numerous updates. Please update and repost with detailed error report.
