Bug Description

When given the restart icon in the task bar and upon pressing it, the system begins to shut down.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR:
1. Progress bar on graphical indicator will descend to 0 setting
2. The system will reboot
3. I will see the system startup post
4. The system will fully reboot and return me to a login screen

INSTEAD:

1. The progress bar descends half-way and no further
2. The system then displays a black screen with a blinking underline cursor in the top left
3. The system never restarts
4. The hard drive is not running

A manual hard reset is necessary to achieve restart.

Description: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release: 8.10
Motherboard: Abit IP35 Pro

Hi US41,

I just wanted to gather some additional information from you. Per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment.

* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log
* sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.log

For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . I'm also curious if there might be a possible workaround for this if you boot with the "reboot=b" boot option. Let us know if that helps. Thanks.

All files are attached as requested.

I do not know how to boot with the option of reboot=b. I'm afraid I am
that end user you are trying to make Ubuntu more accessible to.

Hi US41,

Lets see if I can help explain more how to boot with the reboot=b option. Press 'Escape' key at the 3 second pause by Grub bootloader. Then press 'e' (edit) on the kernel entry you're wanting to boot, followed by 'e' again on the kernel line. Then just add the line "reboot=b" (without the quotes) to the end of the line. Then press 'b' to boot.

That will temporarily add the reboot=b boot option for just that boot.

Hope that helps. Thanks.
