Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

The description is a bit long, so bear with me:

I have multiple email sources (a hotmail account and a gmail account).
If you have just opened pidgin, the "mail counter bar" shows the correct number of emails (right now, for instance, it says "4 new emails.").
After a while though (especially if you get new email in the mean time) this number is updated incorrectly (for instance, it may say "12 new emails." while I only have 4, but I have also seen extremes as "140 new emails" while I had less than 10 at that time).
It is when this counter is incorrect (which is actually a bug in and of itself, the counter should always equal #emails from 1st source + #emails from 2nd source + ... + # emails from last source) that the bug from the description occurs. When I click on the "mail counter bar", the "new mail" dialog opens and shows a number of emails (a number of which are duplicate entries of one another). If I close this dialog, pidgin as a whole crashes.

I've seen this problem every day for a number of weeks now, and I'm pretty sure it's a bug in pidgin 2.5.x (or the libs used by it), but I've also seen similar behavior in 2.4.x (at the very least the incorrect counter problem).

I have this problem too, with jaunty on 32-bit x86. Pidgin package version:
1:2.5.4-2ubuntu2 Not always (but quite often) if I click on the close button of the new mail window (which is there because I've clicked on the "new mails" at the top of the buddy list before), pidgin often crashes. I'm using the facebook chat plugin as well (package version: 1.47-1), I don't know it's related or not though, maybe I see the problem because it's a much common case to have new mail notifications with facebook than with "regular mail". Crash report file is attached.

For now, I've worked around the problem by simply turning this feature off. It's no good to me at the moment anyway.

This just happened (with a single mail source (Hotmail)).

I clicked on "Close" on the mail notification dialog, pidgin hung for a few seconds, then crashed.

System is Jaunty with all packages updated, Pidgin is 2.5.5.

I have this problem also, opening the new emails window and choosing the Close button on the mail notification dialog crashes pidgin.

It doesn't always happen, but seems more likely to happen the longer pidgin has been running (most of the time I have it minimized to the notification tray).

I saw this behavior in an earlier version of pidgin on a Gentoo system.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance.
