Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information.

I reported this bug on the alsa bug tracker https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=4089
to resume to have sound :
- a kernel 2.6.26 or earlier
- alsa 1.0.17 or earlier

So you can install Interpid Ibex (to have the right kernel) and compile alsa. But as describe on the report there are still some problems.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I'm testing the new kernel, I have sound if I add "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig" to the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base (with the same problems already reported). But i can't be sure that the sound work due to the new packages alsa or due to the alsa driver i have compiled. Nevertheless they are no reason that the ubuntu packages of alsa 1.0.17 don't work with the sound card ;).

Thanks for the work that you've been doing. However, I just started
school again so that means I most likely won't have time to do much with
linux. I'm waiting for Intrepid Ibex to see if the sound works on my
laptop. Special thanks for all the work done.

I recently got Asus M50VM-AS023C laptop and installed the latest beta of Intrepid on it. Sound didn't work out of the box but adding "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base did the trick. Sound works now with all the latest updates pulled in and after a reboot.

Thanks for the info, I was waiting to update to Intrepid with the hopes
that the software will be able to recognize the hardware on the laptop.

I have an Asus m50vm-b1 and sound does not work out of the box on Ubuntu 8.10 release. I added the "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and the sound works, but I get crazy erratic beeping and boot and shutdown, and boot and shutdown take extra long. Is there anyway to have sound without all the crazy system beeps? Thanks

Joonatan, your notebook model at least should properly be supported in jaunty, i.e no module parameters should be needed.

John, if you could please run http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh and post back with the URL you are given, that would be much appreciated. Please make sure the URL doesn't wrap, as this seems to break the URL somehow.
