Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.24

My laptop (Acer TravelMate 634LC, P IVM 1.8, 1Gb RAM) hangs whenever acpi is enabled.
acpi=off and acpi=ht work OK. All other options (pci=noacpi, acpi=noirq, pnpacpi=off, noapic, nolapic)
result in hangs at various stages - during boot or later on. The BIOS is Phoenix, updated to the latest
version from manufacturer's site (R01-C0P from 12/27/2004). The

I was able to boot live CD with Madriva (2.6.24) and it seemed not not have any problem with my hardware.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I have exactly the same Acer TravelMate 634 as the original poster. My system behaved exactly the same. I was able to stop the hanging by using the kernel parameter nohz=off (no other acpi/apic related parameters). I hope this helps.

This option, nohz=off fixes the acpi problem for me as well, where before acpi=off and acpi=ht were the only options that allowed me to boot

The nohz=off option fixed the freeze problem for me, as well the acpi=off option.
After a clean install, intrepid was freezing very often, especially when launching programs (from text editor to oowriter...).
No it does not freeze, even if oowriter still hangs during loading.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

I still experience this problem with Lucid on the acer travelmate 8000: if I clear the "nohz=off" from the grub line, the system boots but freezes quite soon. Moreover, the system can suspend but after resumes it, again, freezes quite soon. I attach the dmesg after the suspension-resume.

Did I get something wrong? I still need to use the "nohz=off" to boot my laptop, isn't it right to reopen the bug?

Thanks

zanny, nothing wrong per se. I just want you to open a new bug so that a closed bug can remain closed and we can work on your issue fresh.
