The nohz=off option fixed the freeze problem for me, as well the acpi=off option.
After a clean install, intrepid was freezing very often, especially when launching programs (from text editor to oowriter...).
No it does not freeze, even if oowriter still hangs during loading.
Hardware: Acer Travelmate 630
Distro: Ubuntu 8.10
Kernel: 2.6.27-7-generic
