Totem and VLC crash when doing just about anything with visual effects enabled

I am using Hardy Heron (32-bit). When trying to watch videos on Totem (and VLC) the program crashes sporadically when visual effects are enabled. It could be when I maximize, restore, move the mouse while in fullscreen mode, etc. This is what the console displays when in happens:

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 371 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Well, it says Totem, but the fact that it also occurs in VLC makes it look like a deeper problem

I have the same bug with Ubuntu 8.10 and ATI x1400: Totem and VLC crash, when Visual Effects are enabled (Normal and Extra). I tried both the open source driver and the restricted one. This is the output with Totem:

To be precise, with the restricted driver Totem and VLC do not crash, but the video flickers.

I have the same problem with Compiz! I have Ubuntu 8.04, but only a week ago I updated all the few hundred packages that needed updating using the automatic updating tool. I got this error message in bash:

"Error of failed request: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 141 (XVideo) Minor opcode of failed request: 19 () Serial number of failed request: 87 Current serial number in output stream: 88"

With Compiz enabled I couldnt watch any videos with VLC nor Totem. Now after having turned Compiz off it works just fine again.

I remember the last time I tried it was a month ago and it still didnt work.
I noticed it slows the default matrix screensaver also down very badly. It's
not enough to just install all the updates the update tool finds, or should
I install the totally newer version of Ubuntu?

Same here with Ubuntu 9.04, fresh install. Anything that tries to use xv out with compiz dies. mplayer, vlc, totem, etc. Disabling compiz fixes all problems. Tried nvidia-glx-96 from jaunty and karmic, no difference. Graphics card is nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400]. There are a bunch of bug reports floating around on the driver packages, but it appears that uninstalling compiz fixes the problems.

I moved all my systems from windows to linux-ubuntu when 8.04 was out. I still think that was an smart move.
Since last updates of 8.10 it seems that the support for desktop is going bad. Use to work all OK. Now all desktop graphics are going worst with every update.
(my computer has 3 monitors, 2 nvidia cards on a 9.10-64 bit, 8 gig memory)

- I can't have a window to maximize on one screen only (was working on 8.10).
- When maximize vlc on a screen compiz crashes (was working on 9.04).
- gnome-panel is leaking memory when switch wallpapers (was working on 8.10).

I want to point that I work 14 hour at front of a computer. and this things can be annoying.

This is not a compiz issue but rather the video card running out of memory due to compiz running. The driver needs a proper memory manager in order for this to work correctly. The ati/radeon driver at least has this when using KMS but I don't think the older nvidia drivers do.

Re-opening, as the bug still happens using Ubuntu 10.04 (Totem, VLC). Disabling Compiz or closing some programs is a workaround.

     My gnome session kept crashing using the nouveau driver when surfing the web with a high graphic content site. After researching, I decided to use the proprietary drivers from Nvidia. After installing those drivers, I could not start a X session (gdm), I would get the "white screen of death" at boot, after the Ubuntu splash.

     After a couple of days, I found that adding Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP" in my Device section of the xorg.conf fixed that. My gdm stopped crashing, all looked happy. Then I played a video, and when I tried to go to full screen, the player crashed as reported above.

     Disabling the effects under the Visual Effects tab in System - Preferences - Appearance solved the full screen problem.

  Seems to have had a very similar bug with Intel drivers, back in 2007
     https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/111257

  From what I can see, it all has to do with an xv output. I am researching what xv is, it appears to deal with overlay.

I'm using nvidia 195 and totem crashes whenever I change video mode. This happens if I use the Nvidia control panel, and also during resume from suspend. Is this the same bug?
