Bug Description

Hi,
I am not able to find any solution on the internet so I've decided to report a bug (sorry for that):
I haven't been updating my Ubuntu Gutsy for more than a week so I've decided to do it today. To my great surprise I've got a bunch of errors:

Then I've tried to install the rest of updates and I've got similar errors again:

What is wrong?

Thank you,

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add the log files from '/var/log/dist-upgrade/' to this bug report as attachments? Thanks in advance.

Hi Greg,
Please, see attached the tar.gz file of the files from the /var/log/dist-upgrade/ directory.
I'm surprised a little bit as those files have 'date modified' sometime in February...

hawran

Thanks for the files.

2 things: could you attach your sources.list file to the bug please
and, did you perform a dist-upgrade back in February?

Hi Greg,
I'm sending my sources.list.
As for your second question, I started with the 7.04 version a year ago and sometimes this year (it might be in February) I upgraded to 7.10. However, I've done some successful updates since then, that was the reason I was surprised by that error.

peter

1) uncomment the line (remove the "#") that looks like this in your sources.list file:
# deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu gutsy main restricted universe multiverse
Better yet, use the attached sources.list file

2) the dist-upgrade.tar.gz only contained logs from february of this year. In other words, the attempt you made at upgrade on May 6th with the scrollkeeper errors is not present and not diagnosable.

3) After you do number 1) please attempt the dist-upgrade again and if it fails attach the /var/log/dist-upgrade/ directory again.

Sorry, after you attempt a normal upgrade, please attach the file /var/log/apt/term.log also.

Thanks!

Hi Greg,

Well, I can use your source list, no problem.

However, I've got a question regarding '... please attempt the dist-upgrade again'. Are you suggesting that I should run 'apt-get dist-upgrade' from a command line?
I don't upgrade using the command line, I use synaptic and it doesn't show any 'distribution upgrades availalable' but security (or recommended) patches.
Hence my questions are as follows:

WHY should I use the 'apt' application now?
WHAT is wrong with my previous upgrade?
Have I DONE anything wrong? WHAT?

Regards,
peter

Greg Grossmeier (greg.grossmeier) wrote :

Sorry, I first thought you were trying to perform a distribution upgrade to Hardy, not just a normal upgrade for Gutsy, hence the confusion.

So, after you replace the sources.list file (you will need to use "sudo" to do this) in Synaptic click the Reload button, then Mark All Upgrades, then Apply and if it fails attach the /var/log/apt/term.log file.

Sorry for the confusion, and no, you haven't done anything wrong.

Hi Greg,
I've just updated my Ubuntu and everything seems to be OK.
I think you can close this defect.
