Sorry, I first thought you were trying to perform a distribution upgrade to Hardy, not just a normal upgrade for Gutsy, hence the confusion.

So, after you replace the sources.list file (you will need to use "sudo" to do this) in Synaptic click the Reload button, then Mark All Upgrades, then Apply and if it fails attach the /var/log/apt/term.log file.

Sorry for the confusion, and no, you haven't done anything wrong.
