Bug Description

Binary package hint: audacity

I have problems recording with Audacity 1.3.4 at all (see Bug #203837), and when troubleshooting I tried to use the information dialog "Audio Device Info". The message window (except for the title) is empty.

I expected some device name to appear in the dialog window.

I use Ubuntu 8.04 on a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop.

Perhaps I should have added that my laptop indeed *have* sound capabilities, which worked fine with 1.3.3

I too have the same or similar problem. I click on Edit/Preferences and when I choose Audio I/O then the top left (Audio Playback Device) it is empty with no dropdown menu, however the recording device shows drop-down options.

Playback works with mp3 file double clicked on desktop for example. So must be an internal to Audacity

afterfostercare, a possible workaround could be to start audacity with the terminal command "pasuspender audacity" (make sure audacity is not running before you do that). Did it work?

Yes that worked thank-you very much. Then I just tried "audacity" and again it did not work so tell me... why?

What does
pasuspender audacity

mean? Suspend PA ? I don't get it

That worked.... can you explain why?

pasuspender = suspend pulseaudio. For more information about pulseaudio-audacity interaction, you can see bug #178895, or http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup . The short story is that a fix in on its way, but I'm unsure whether it will reach Hardy.

I haven't tried, I'm still on Intrepid.

I don't think this is present in Jaunty. I just started audacity from the gnome menu and opened the audio device info window which had a bunch of text information in it.

I'm using Jaunty and I get both blank record and playback device buttons. I have two audio devices, an internal card which is used by pulseaudio, and an external usb interface which is not.

Forgot to say the pasuspender audacity doesn't work for me. However I do see a small dotted rectangle when I mouseover each button. Is it possible that in my case this could be something to do with GTK widgets not rendering properly in KDE4?

Robert: This bug is about "Help -> Audio device info" being empty. Are you experiencing that as well?

Does playback and recording work in other programs?

By the way, Jaunty has a patch that enables playback/recording via pulseaudio (as an ALSA device), so pasuspender shouldn't be necessary anyway.
