Sure.

I wasn't around the computer when I left it to upgrade.

Oh yeah, me too. Namely updating Ubuntu Studio 7.10 to 8.04. I had to
remove audacious, audacious-plugins and audacious-plugins-extra to
get it to work at all. After dist-upgrade I did a reinstall of
audacious (whitout the -extra). Now they dont work or something, I
really dont know much anymore about these packages.. This is getting
pretty confusing, and I had lots of trouble getting them off my
machine in the first place.

apt-get remove audacious-plugins-extras

I did `apt-get remove audacious-plugins`, which also forced the removal of
audacious and ubuntustudio-audio. I then ran `do-release-upgrade`, which
completed the upgrade process. I then did `apt-get install
ubuntustudio-audio`, which pulled in audacious and about a dozen other
packages.
So now I have a functioning hardy system, I think. My broadcom wifi
stopped working, so I re-ran the fwcutter script, or actually, the
restricted-drivers widget prompted me and ran it for me.
However, on first boot, a message popped up about 'can't load human
theme', and now I have a plain black wallpaper, which I don't mind since
I'm an old text terminal kinda guy, anyway.

For the Ubuntu Studio Gutsy -> Hardy upgrade failure, I just had to do:
    apt-get remove audacious-plugins-extras
And then retry the upgrade through the DVD. Worked flawlessly after removing
the package.

For the 'can't load human theme' problem, I solved it by choosing the login
screen via gdmsetup:
   sudo gdmsetup
This will bring up the GDM Setup screen, where you can choose the Ubuntu
Studio Login. Look at the post by Yuki at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=473971&highlight=human.xml. Though
it is for Fiesty, the basic reason behind the issue and the fix for it is
the same.
