Hardy - No network connectivity on fresh install

Bug Description

It seems that on fresh installs (in this test-case context, a eeePC), a DHCP lease is not pulled. This is with a daily-build from yesterday.
If a DHCP lease is managed to be pulled, DNS fails to resolve shortly thereafter.

Will include output of lspci and lsmod when I am able to.

Please advise to any additional info needed.

First off, the DVD version is a bit of a messy thing if i recall correctly.
Secondly, the eeePC 100x series have entirely different hardware, so
this is a different bug.

If i were you, i'd burn the alternate cd and try that.

Indeed it is extremely important to specify WHICH Eee PC model you have; apparently there are huge differences in hardware across the many Eee models.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 on an Eee PC 1000H, and I've fixed the nonfunctioning Atheros Attansic wired ethernet controller by following the instructions here:

Me too. My eeepc 701 4G used to have a perfectly working ethernet port with the original Xandros. Later on, I upgraded the bios to version 0901, and I started running Kubuntu 8.04 from a flash usb drive. I am not sure which of these two affected the ethernet connection, but it no longer works in Xandros, and it doesn't work in Kubuntu, either.

The network manager is not pulling a DHCP lease, as noted above, but no error message is shown. Atl2 is loaded, according to lsmod, and the ethernet card is listed as eth2 in KNetworkManager

Removing the battery and power helped me get Kubuntu see the card (there were times when it wouldn't even show in the network manager).

I am not sure what's the best way to debug this. Any ideas, welcome. Maybe I should look at /var/log/messages ...

Hi, good news.
I tryed beta version of Xubuntu 8.10 with my Asus EeePC 1000H.
I have just tryed it from CD (not installed, since I want to keep a partition for Win$$$ and want to take a close look), and my LAN (wired) internet connection works just out of the box.

Good news, hope to see all working, Wifi and everythiing.
Stay tuned !

Hi hi,

Just installed eeebuntu standard 1.0 on an eeepc 1000, which is ubuntu 8.04. ifconfig -a shows my card, and I attempted turning off and unplugging everything including battery, but no luck, it doesn't acknowledge any connection at all, not even through ethernet cord... when going to network settings, all i get is "point to point connection" and it says is not configured. Any ideas?

Dnsmasq has had versions which have been known to refuse leases to certain clients based on their dhclient (if it's an older dnsmasq version, not sure on exact version number).

Check dnsmasq's bugs.

If anything, this might be a dhclient bug.

I'm well aware of what dnsmasq is, though. Many home routers (linksys wrt54g's, etc.) use dnsmasq, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm not sure the "linux" package is an appropriate assigning.

Hi brent-saner,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 219662

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I had this problem with a fresh install on a eee pc 1000ha. The following thread got wired networking going for me:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1219931

The compilation was against the 2.6.28.11 kernel that was on the image. I was able to do an update, which then installed the .15 kernel, which didn't require the fix, so I assume that this bug was fixed somewhere between .11 and .15.
