Adaptec 29320LPE crashes server

I have the Hardy Heron beta running on my Dell PE6950 server, with an Adaptec 29320LPE scsi adapter connected to external storage.

The external storage and cabling were working with an older server running Dapper.

The initial error, recorded in /var/log/messages is:

    sd 1:0:0:4: Attempting to queue an ABORT message:CDB: 0x1a 0x0 0x8 0x0 0x20 0x0

I downloaded an updated linux driver kit from Adaptec (aic7Yxx-2.0.26-6.3.11-linux-2.6.tgz). Inside that source, there are references to
special handling for the Adaptec 29320LPE. I have not yet been able to recompile and test the new driver, but I'm working on it.

Would you also be able to capture and attach your dmesg output after you experience this issue? Was there any improvement when you tested the new driver? Thanks.

So far, I have been unable to get the newer driver to compile. As soon as I fix one undefined symbol, and another one appears. It looks like the aic7xxx directory shipped with Hardy has been modified from the original Adaptec driver, with a large number of coding repairs.

I was able to get the card to work by reducing the bus speed from U320 to U160. I may have to live with this, because I need to get the server into service.

I will revert back to U320, and post dmesg output as soon as I can.

Here is the dmesg output, when the Adaptec 29320LPE is running in U320 mode. When it is restricted to U160 mode, dmesg output is normal, without SCSI errors.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I am getting exactly the same problem.

I am using an IBM System x3400 with the Adaptec 29320LP Ultra320 SCSI adapter card, and HP Ultrium 320 Tape Drive
I am using Ubuntu Server edition (8.04) (64bit)

All equipment is new - and tape drive works with windows software

apport-collect 218903

As well, could you please capture the oops following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ? In addition, if you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

The machine on which this problem occurred has been retired, so the
problem is no longer reproducable.
