Confirmed Hardy amd64.

Freezes at Loading hardware drivers. Seems like an nvidia problem but I don't know for sure.

Herbert, are you using nvidia?

Conversation in #ubuntu+1 points to a problem at or near the point wireless interfaces are trying to come up. One user noticed it hanging at his broadcom device, it hung trying to bring up my intel 4965 device.

This is on today's hardy desktop amd64 daily-live. As mentioned, can't boot this kernel.

I thought I had this problem, but it turned out that the system just takes its time to boot. took some 5 minutes of non-responsiveness, but then came up normally. how long have you waited.

That wasn't the case for me, I waited 30 minutes or better before rebooting back to -15

This was a bug in linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24, which has already been fixed; please reboot to a previous kernel and install the following update:

linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24 (2.6.24-16.22) hardy; urgency=low

  * Revert "cx88 NULL pointer dereference"
It appears to cause lockups during sound device registration and probably
affects all platforms with audio devices.

linux-ubuntu-modules fixes the freeze, but the restricted modules are still messed up. nvidia won't load in (sudo modprobe nvidia).

Yes I'm using nvidia.
But am on a 32bit machine.

Last message in the console was:

kinit: trying to resume from /dev/disk/by-uuid/2ee....etc
kinit: No resume image. doing normal boot.

After I hit ctrl/alt/del at this stage there
are multiple messages about being unable to write
to an unmoutend disk. (/var/..log

Steve and xtknight:

Yes, this fixes the "no boot" problem. I let it go longer as Joachim suggested. It did indeed go further, but only to "loading manual modules" then no further.

As xtknight points out, there is another bug involved, that with the nvidia module. I can confirm xtknight's report that the nvidia module will no longer load. But this is a separate bug, and probably related to linux-restricted-modules or nvidia-glx-new.

xtknight, if you don't open the new bug, then I will later when I return home. I'll search your bug reports later to see if it's in.

Harvey

Updating the modules did solve the booting problem
but I was left with an unusable nVidia card.

Solved this by installing the nVidia drivers from their website.

Also noticed that when in Synaptic to update the kernel modules
there were about 14 other programs availabe to update in
the Installed (upgradable) status field. (a lot of them involving compiz)
I've installed all those as well.

System seems ok now.

Same problem, and I think that the problem is in saa7134 module. In recovery mode boot process stops after loading saa7134 module!

on another PC without it everything works fine

I have linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24 (2.6.24-16.23) installed and am still seeing a hang after "Loading Hardware Drivers" in either regular or recovery mode.

The hang appears to happen at a different random point after the shpchp loads; sometimes after PC Speaker, sometimes after power button.

I'm running AMD64, with an NVidia card, on a supermicro X7DAL-E with version 2.0B of their bios.

Previous kernel (2.6.22) works fine.

Do I need to downgrade to 2.6.24-16.22 ?

I confirm this.

linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24 (2.6.24-16.23) won't solve the non boot situation.

I am running AMD64 with Gigabyte nforce430

Previous kernel (2.6.22) works as well.

As far as I can see if live-initramfs is installed, system will boot and kernel 2.6.24 loads pata_amd (where 2.6.22 loads ata_generic modules). Booting with live-initramfs results to a system 10 times slower than the one with the previous kernel.

I upgraded from 7.10 where everything was running fine.

Maybe the status of this bug should change ?
