Bug Description

Binary package hint: alsa-utils

Since my first upgrade to hardy, I git that message trying to run alsamixer.

alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: No such file or directory

alsa sound output works thought, it is just that I do not ave access to any mixer (graphics versions of alsamixer suffer the same way)

here are some details about my system :

uname -a

Linux chameau 2.6.24-12-generic #1 SMP Wed Mar 12 22:31:43 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Hi, how come you could mark it as a duplicate ? It's not the same bug at all !? In this one *Zenigata*
reports alsamixer does not function but _the sound does_, in the #192382 bug report *polarch* reports that the sound _does not_ function either.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/192382
"however no sound is coming out"

Well I'm coming here to say I've met with the same bug as *Zenigata* did:

I have a Via integrated card, the sound is really GOOD under Hardy Heron !
"$ lspci | grep Audio
04:01.0 Audio device: VIA Technologies, Inc. VIA High Definition Audio Controller (rev 10)"

But if I try to see how it goes in alsamixer:
"$ alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: No such file or directory"

if I try as root, (even real root) it's the same.

"# alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: No such file or directory".

What I can notice is that versions alsa-utils (which contains alsamixer) and alsa-base are different:
"find /var/cache/apt/archives/ -name 'alsa*'
/var/cache/apt/archives/alsa-base_1.0.16-0ubuntu4_all.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/alsa-utils_1.0.15-3ubuntu2_i386.deb"

And no new version has come out yet for alsa-utils (repositories informations just updated):
"wajig install alsa-utils
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
alsa-utils is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded."

@Joyce Markoll: This bug is indeed a duplicate of bug 192382. And I Did have
sound without the alsamixer working. The problem arises when you try the
solution proposed on the thread, which is to recompile the alsa-source with
module-assistant to the last version of alsa-modules. Then I had no sound
and that's when the option snd-hda-intel was needed. This seems to be the
only solution up till now, except if you want to move to Intrepid, which is
still in alpha. Go through the thread, it's pretty long...
