Bug Description

Since network-manager 0.6.6~rc2 entered Hardy this morning, wireless connections no longer work. Selecting any host among the list of access point shown in the applet fails. This is a serious regression.

I'm sorry if I'm hijacking your bug-report now but I think I have the same issue.
The problem seems to be with the patch 41t_nm_device_wireless_index_ctrl_sockets_by_run_count.patch
I'll attach my daemon.log to show what I think is the issue.
The problem seems to arise when I try to switch from one network to another, the first "run" of wpa_supplicant works, but when nm tries to start another then it can't find its control socket.

It's also broken here, with 0ubuntu3. The kde nm applet just asks for password again and again, but connection is never established.
The relevant (I guess) part of the log is that:

I'm using madwifi too, and its broken. It just keeps spinning and spinning with no green light and eventually gives up. If I look at the command line I can see that not only has the access point been found, but running dhclient ath0 gets an IP address and the connection "works", until network-manager gives up and brings down the interface.

The constant we notice above is that it mainly affects users of mad-wifi, which is one of the last drivers that hasn't been merged into the kernel tree or converted to the unified wifi stack design used since kernel 2.6.24. While I haven't looked at the upstream chnagelog, I wouldn't be surprised if 0.6.6 breaks on madwifi simply because it has migrated to the unified wifi stack as a method of interacting with the interfaces.

hi all,

it doesn't really help if you dump your confirmation about "wireless is so broken" in this generic bug report. Each of you: please open a _new_ bug (please don't assume that you have found a duplicate unless you know the details) , If its a duplicate some skilled bug triager will figure that out for you.

OK, so if you file a new bug, please

 1. name the chipset in the bug title (e.g. [ipw3945] cannot connect with network manager 0.6.6-0ubuntu1) - be sure to name the exact network-manager package version.
 2. attach a the _complete_ /var/log/syslog (be sure that a failed connect attempt is in there as well).
 3. if you can connect manually post the steps and any config files involved in this as well.

this bug is invalid now.

I have tested this on my MacBook Pro second-gen (first core 2 duo edition) with the i386 and x86_64 editions of Hardy, both have the same problem. I am using the latest trunk checkout of madwifi.

Same driver works on OpenSUSE 10.3 on the same laptop and 0.6.5 of network-manager on Hardy.

just upgraded to 8.04 Beta. I see all the networks, but when I try to connect to any of them, NetworkManager hangs with the cpu on 100%, I can only kill it. I am using b43 firmware, so I am not sure it's relevant for this bug report.

P.S. It's the same no matter if there is encryption or not on the wireless network.

Unfortunately I don't think that installing the debug symbols packages helps network-manager generate a useful backtrace. If someone who's experiencing this feels up to it you could compile network manager locally with DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="nostrip" and that should hopefully result in some useful debug symbols in the backtrace.
The instructions for rebuilding a debug-version can be found here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash (since network-manager has its own way of generating a backtrace you have to use the "Prior Ubuntu versions" way.

Mixing information from unrelated problems in a single bug report makes it very difficult to ever close out *any* bug reports. Either find an open bug report whose description matches your symptoms and subscribe to that, or if necessary, file a new bug report.
