Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

Dan Williams and Tambet Ingo are close to releasing 0.6.6 and 0.6.5.99/0.6.6RC2 is now available. I understand that the intent with Hardy was to push out 0.7 but it looks like the volatility of 0.7 has understandably made that difficult.

0.6.6 has a number of HUGE improvements over 0.6.5:
Network profile editor
Wired 802.1x
AutoIP Notification (A different icon is used if an AutoIP address is used since a DHCP server failed to respond)
More EAP types are exposed in the Applet
Fixes for scanning issues
Plus a Large number of bug fixes.

If a Version Freeze exception is granted this new version resolves the following bugs:
40232: No (easy) way to stop auto-association to an already trusted network
132473: [gutsy] network-manager i have to manually configure wpa/2 enterprise every time to connect
41134:(Security vulnerability) Does not store WPA-Enterprise password in keyring
75554: Unable to connect to SSID containing asterisks (*)
82113 network-manager lacks 802.1x ethernet support
107598 No one-click method to activate saved manual network profile
118439 Connects to any available network without asking

I am including the Changelog's and Diffstat's and subscribing Ubuntu-Release as requested at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreezeExceptionProcess

Thank you!

It is likely that a number of patches Ubuntu has been carrying can be dropped as well.

I /think/ that the following patches can probably be dropped:
24pp_svn2578-gnome354565-fix-ethernet-link-detection-races.patch
24pp_svn2579-sleep-1-second-to-stabilize-if.patch
24pp_svn2591_Ensure-the-device-is-up-stage3.patch
24pp_svn2604_Add-HAL-based-rfkill-support.patch
24pp_svn2605-gnome354565-dont-up-notwired-interfaces.patch
24pp_svn2618_set-hardware-RF-to-enabled-if-no-killswitches.patch
24pp_svn2754-lp101857-endianess.patch

0.6.5 in Ubuntu has become very stable and while I personally think that the added features in 0.6.6 (Profile editor primarily) warrant upgrading the version in Hardy I also understand that stability is the key and that this close to release a change to a core application is a large risk and a lot of work for the package maintainer.

Thanks!

Do we have packages of this somewhere? It would be nice for people to test it in a PPA, at least.

... as darren says. there are mostly high impact bugs fixed in 0.6.6 and we already ship a lot of patches cherry-picked from svn in 0.6.5

FFe ack for this. As nice as it would be to have packages to test first, network-manager already fails to build from source in hardy because of the new libnl that's been uploaded there, so we need much of the code from the new version anyway - better to take the new version with all its other bugfixes and shake out any bugs afterwards than to spend time backporting here.
