It all started when I re-installed linux (whether version Feisty or
Gutsy). The problem was first noticed when I first installed gutsy with
a new installment (not upgrade). As I had other problems with that
version I re-installed (with format) the Feisty version and then
upgraded to Gutsy. With all these installations (Feisty and Gutsy) I
wasn't able to use Hyperlinks.
This was about a month ago. Before that I had Dapper Drake installed and
had no problems.

Greg, another observation. There is NO hyperlinking in ANY program other
than my browser (firefox). I tried with Konqueror, in a spreadsheet with
a mailto: column. In none of these does the hyperlink work. Only when
I'm in the browser does it work.

Errol, Konqueror is a web browser also.

So, if I am understanding you correctly, you can not navigate any website in Konqueror?

I obviously didn't explain myself. I can navigate in any browser
including Konqueror. What I meant was that even if I make Konqueror my
default browser, hyperlinks don't open it (not only Firefox). The
problem seems to be one of any application that isn't a web browser not
opening hyperlinks. I noticed it in Thunderbird as that is the main
source of non browser hyperlinks As I said the "non-opening" of
hyperlinks occured in a spreadsheet as well where I have a "mailto"
column that used to open a mail writer with the relevant address.

Two things:

Install "thunderbird-gnome-support" and see if that helps the situation. Even if you are running Kubuntu, it has been reported to fix this problem before (from bug 173271).

If that doesn't change anything, try the suggestion here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3033722&postcount=7

That is from bug 146944.

I'm glad it is fixed but...

Which part worked? That is very important.

Thanks

I installed "thunderbird-gnome-support". I was then able to hyperlink
from Thunderbird to any (as far as my tests have gone) hyperlink. An
e-mail address, an URL, an attachment - all opened after clicking on the
hyperlink.
Greg what other info do you need from me?

Just making sure, you are using Ubuntu (gnome) not Kubuntu (KDE) correct?

Further clarification.
The problem was here from the first installation of Feisty and the
upgrade to Gutsy. All my installations were in Kubuntu with KDE3. I
didn't start with Ubuntu and then convert to KDE. I installed KDE4 only
a few days ago. The problem with Hperlinks was there through all these
versions and changes until your solution of installing
"thunderbird-gnome-support".

The problem exists in Thunderbird version 2.0.0.9 (20080214), I'm using Ubuntu Hardy Heron alpha 4 amd64 (but it exists in i386) with Firefox 2.0 and 3.0b3.
I read above about the suggestion in http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3033722&postcount=7 but I don't have such an entry (network.protocol-handler.app.http) in the configuration of thunderbird and don't know how or where to create it.

It vorked for me on Ubuntu 7.10. Here the entry was also missing.

Open menu Edit->Preferences->Advanced->General, click Config Editor.

If the above mentioned entry is not there, right click somewhre on the
list, and create a string entry with that name. Set the value to the
path to the browser (use "which firefox" to find it, here it gave
"/usr/bin/firefox").

Use the same method once again, create an entry for network.protocol-handler.app.httpd with the same value.

Works fine. :-)

But it is a bug, that these entries are not defaulted in the Thunderbird package. I have never seen that problem in earlier versions.

As someone recommended I installed thunderbird-gnome-support but it doesn't work. I also tried to add the network.protocol-handler.app.http but nothing happens.

I installed Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) and needed to install thunderbird-gnome-support *and* add entries for network.protocol-handler.app.http and network.protocol-handler.app.https, setting both to /usr/bin/firefox. I suspect that Kubuntu doesn't install thunderbird-gnome-support by default but I'm not sure why the Thunderbird config editor needs additional entries. Presumably Thunderbird doesn't differ from Ubuntu (GNOME) to Kubuntu (KDE).

But at least this works.

I have done every step mentioned still no luck. tbird will not launch firefox2. I have tried to completely remove and fresh installs. After an hour of uninstalling and trying each solution on a fresh install I must come to the conclusion that Ubuntu does not take this seriously. And neither does Mozilla.

Ubuntu 8.04.1 AMD 64
Firefox 2 (out of the repos)
Tbird (out of repos)

Since all come from Ubuntu repros, why they will not work together baffles me. Could have removing Evolution from my system caused this?
